My fabric store has just brought in a collection of beautiful hand-dyes rayon batiks from Bali and I would like suggestions as to what pattern lines might best utilize them. I carry Kwik Sew and Folkwear patterns, but am looking to branch out with more independent lines. I want to make interesting samples that will encourage sewists to try both the batiks and the patterns. I personally have never sewn with rayon.

Comments on their appropriateness plus ease of use (instructions) will help. Thank you for your help!

Linda

I've used Loes Hines Gore Skirt group #5007
Here's a pic

Lots of Marcy Tilton's patterns also work well.

I have lots or rayon batiks that I have been aging in my stash so I am very interested in the responses to your question.

I know that Batik Butik who used to sell gorgeous rayon batiks at the Sewing and Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, WA had a line of patterns. They still have a website www.batikbutik.com

Have you seen these:

I've made some, and when they used to go to Sewing Expos and fairs, they even had made up samples in real clothes of their patterns and actually quite a few of them were I believe made of drapey Batik rayon fabric. So it would be suitable for lots of their wrap styles and such.

One other line is Victoria Jones. It's mainly resort/loungewear plus Hawaiian clothing and (although IMO almost nothing can compare with Kwik Sew) I have found the instructions to be pretty good on the couple of patterns I've tried. It's a relatively small and focused line and I don't know if it's the sort of thing your customers are looking for, but I think many if not most of their patterns would work well for rayon batik.

Yeah FTF!! Love the rayon batiks. I have always looked for a red & white rayon batik I think would be very pretty. Rayon is a tricky material - especially the rayon batik. It is shifty and moves. I am sitting here thinking that the rayon batik would benefit from a stiffening agent before cutting out.

Have you tried Danamarie.com (used to be Purrfection)?

I love rayon batiks! Here are a couple patterns I've used -

Vogue 1307
Vogue 8552(forgot to do a review on this one)

Really, any pattern that has a fairly simple design to show off the fabric would work:
Burda 7207, View A
New Look 6120

Rayon can fray, and can be slippery to work with, but it is so comfy to wear it's well worth any challanges IMHO.

Batik Butik does have beautiful fabric. They are still in business, under new ownership, and will be at SewExpo this year. I'll be helping at their booth, dressed in clothing made with Batik Butik fabric! Not sure what I'm making yet, but definitely something that flows. Everyone working at the booth will have on garments they've made, so stop by and get some ideas!
