help with applique problems

I recently got a Brother PE-500 as an intro machine to get me started with embroidery and applique. I'm hoping to take my own designs that I've created on Adobe Illustrator (vector art) and convert them to embroidery and/or applique files. I've downloaded Stitch Era Universal which lets you do this and converting the files to stitch embroidery seems to be going smoothly. However, when I try to do an applique, it seems the machine does not recognize when to stop after the placement, tack down, and zig zag stitches. Those stitches are showing on the machine as one color and therefore the machine stitches them all at once and only then stops. Has anyone had this problem? I'm at a loss. Thanks.

Date: 1/9/13 0:32 AM You have to make each segment (placement, tack down, and zig zag stitches) a different color for your machine to recognize that it has to stop. The level of machine you have does not have the technology built in to recognize hard stops like applique, only color changes.

I just did some projects from Anita Goodesign that included applique ... and the thread colors that came up on the screen were different for each step and those colors (IIRC) were *not* in the design itself when it was doing stitches for the tack down and fabric-size-to-cut (what's the name of that when it does the border of the project?!?! lol) ------ nightowlsally.com On my radar someday: Babylock Serger, and some machine for travel. I definitely get that each stitch type has to be a different color - what I can't figure out is how to change the colors. Stitch Era Universal seems to group all three stitches together as one thread color, and only finishing satin stitch is different. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something or if that's just how this particular program works.

There was a way to change each segment in Stitch Era Universal but it has been 18 months since I last used the program and don't remember specifically how to do it. I am currently using PE-Design Next and can state that purchasing embroidery software that has support and resources available was one of the best decisions I made. I struggled with SEUniversal (and I come from an IT background) and got so frustrated I just wanted to give up. Invest the money in a good editing only program (unless you want to digitize like I do) and you will be MUCH happier.

Then go ahead and put the applique fabric and let it tack down. Then pause it again and go ahead and switch colors for the satin stitch if you want.

You are (or should be) sitting in front of the machine as it is stitching. If there is a stop, the machine stops and cuts the thread, or stops for the operator to cut the thread.
