Hi,

I'm enrolled in the Craftsy Knit class. I am looking for baby jersey. I'm already not making the hoodie because I couldn't find the exact fabric at a decent price. My problem is I don't know what to substitute that I would like and would work w/ the pattern.
The T-shirt calls for baby jersey w/ 50% stretch. I found the following fabrics:
These do not specify how much stretch:
http://www.sewbaby.com/shopbaby/product_info.php?products_id=7077 Boring but could wear it to work
http://www.sewbaby.com/shopbaby/product_info.php?products_id=7305 Like this bright color
http://www.sewbaby.com/shopbaby/product_info.php?products_id=7072 Good basic color

Unable to find reviews of these companies here or on the web. http://www.1derfulldeals.com/cotton%20Lycra.htm
http://www.nickoftime.net/p-8118-pink-10-oz-cottonlycra-jersey-knit-fabric.aspx Can you folks offer any help?

I'm so bummed and frustrated. Finding the right quilting materials and supplies was never this hard. This is a very basic class. I don't even like most of what we are making but I know classes teach skills that build on each other so I want to do it right. I'm having trouble finding the right fabrics not to mention that I can't find it all in one spot. Even the thread has to be ordered from a different store. Joann's doesn't have Maxi Lock stretch. There are beautiful stretch fabrics I'd love to sew with available from Sawyerbrook and Gorgeous Fabrics but they are not what is called for in this class and I have no idea how to substitute. Wovens seem so much easier.

Thanks for letting me vent,

Maggie

My whine: it is much easier for the reader if the links are highlighted like this.

Open the http:// icon at the top of the message screen and copy the link, then follow the prompts.

You can do several by clicking on Preview then going to the link for the address to be copied.

Think of the classes as your "muslin". You are learning for future reference.

I believe that ITY knits typically have a 40-50% crosswise stretch. With tons of colors and designs available (at a variety of price points), this might be a good option for you. Could you share with us the exact patterns being used in the class? That way, we might be able to better suggest appropriate fabric substitutions.

I'm not familiar with this specific course, but I know that with most other Craftsy classes I've taken, it hasn't been a problem for me to follow the instruction while working with a different pattern or project. I'd imagine that most of what you'll be learning is not specific to one garment, but can be used when working with any knit project. If you really don't like the suggested patterns for your class, don't be afraid to switch to something better suited to your taste or personal needs.

Good luck with your class!

There are six reviews for sewbaby here at pr, all strongly positive.

You can certainly email them to ask about their fabric weights. You probably could also email your teacher for the Craftsy class to ask questions. They do say they'll respond to enrollees.

I have a very hard time finding decent knits (jersey or interlock or ribbed.) Hancocks has a decent selection of ribbed (usually with some spandex) and interlock. I don't think they carry the baby/jersey stuff.

You might try http://www.stitchsimple.com/shopping/default.asp

They are liquidating and may have some stuff you like (I can recommend the Harmony Art Pink--but it's not on sale and is really expensive fabric. Probably not good for a learning class.)

This vendor on Ebay happens to have some good stuff right now too:

http://stores.ebay.com/koshtex

But what they have up kind of comes and goes. This is some of the better selection I've ever seen (I'm big into knits and jersey and the like and you're right--it is way harder to find.)

As a matter of fact, the ebay vendor you mention has some knits specifically called baby jersey.

Thank you for the link. I love that pink. It doesn't have the lycra in it
Do you think it will have the 50% stretch?

Yes, I know. That's why I mentioned them. But I haven't personally ordered from them yet. I'm thinking of calling them and asking if they can send a swatch of a couple of things.

The stuff looks great and is reasonably priced and, as I said, I have a hard time finding quality knits that are all cotton (or with very little spandex). And that's about all I sew with when I'm not quilting or using the leftovers to make bags/totes/gift wraps.
