Date: 1/13/13 3:28 PM I'm making a pair of jeans and want to top stitch with the cotton jeans top stitch thread put out by Gutermann. This is a thicker type of thread.
My bobbin keeps jamming. I'm using a size 14 needle, I've loosened my tension, and I'm using a long stitch (4.5) I'm also using regular thread in the bobbin. It seems to be worse when starting and back stitching. Help! Any suggestions??? -- Edited on 1/13/13 3:30 PM -- ------ Lorri

Date: 1/13/13 3:53 PM Test a size 16 jeans needle on scraps of the fabric, folded to mimic the same as what you would be top stitching..
Hold onto the thread tails as you begin the stitching, or butt a scrap of fabric up to the fabric and start sewing on the scrap and on to the fashion fabric.
I have always used C & C jeans thread and occasionally had the same issue. |

Date: 1/13/13 3:56 PM Are you using a topstitch needle? It has a longer eye and deeper groove so the thread doesn't catch.
I use YLI Jeans Thread that is a 30wt. but I don't know how it compares in thickness to Gutermman.
Superior recommends a 100/16 for 30wt. and thicker.

Date: 1/13/13 4:02 PM Jeans foot #8 for your 730. Also go into the creative consultant and tell the machine what you are doing...it changes the settings for you. I very often drop my feed dogs to secure a stitch instead of back stitching. ------ "The problem is not that there are problems. Date: 1/13/13 4:11 PM Is it ok that I'm using regular thread in the bobbin? I know I can't use the thick stuff but didn't know if there was something else I should be using. And the underside of my stitching looks horrible! My top thread is showing through and has little loops which would indicate my tension is too loose. I tightened it back to the normal setting and it still looks loopy. ------ Lorri

Date: 1/13/13 4:17 PM Thank you all for the advice. I completely forgot about the topstitch needle.
And I'm still learning to use the features on the 730. I'll go into the consultant and see what happens. ------ Lorri

Date: 1/13/13 4:20 PM Regular thread should not be a problem...but that thread is not that thick...put it in the bobbin and try. I have and had good results when using it in top and bobbin. -- Edited on 1/13/13 4:24 PM -- ------ "The problem is not that there are problems. 1 member likes this. Date: 1/13/13 4:20 PM Use the size 14 topstitch needle, C&C Jeans Thread or Sulky Blendables (30 wt) in the top, and regular Mettler poly in the bobbin. I like to put a little silicon lubricant on the needle (or the thread). Make sure you bring the bobbin thread to the top, and hold both threads to begin the stitching so they don't pull underneath the stitch plate and get tangled. |

Date: 1/13/13 4:29 PM If a thread is really thick I'll try to use my extra bobbin case that I keep for bobbin work...but this thread is not very thick. I have the same stuff and love it. They make it in a denim blue and a gold. ------ "The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem." Theodore Rubin
