Ok, got a newsletter from Simplicity.com announcing printable patterns through PrintSew.com with these misleading words:

Quote:
—Instant Gratification—
Printable Sewing Patterns at Simplicity.com

LIE!

Leaving aside the pros and cons of using this company, here's what will NOT make me use this service though I am attracted to several patterns (like Cynthia Rowleys and Amazing Fit):

Quote:
*Free delivery of printable patterns applies to USA based customers only. International orders still need to process through our third party vendor, International Checkout and will incur a 20% handling fee plus $0.50.

emphasis mine

Why would international clients like me want to pay MORE MONEY just to print out a pattern? They are basically canceling the appeal of pdf patterns for people, like me, who would have to pay substantial shipping and taxes for the printed patterns.

Oh, and the icing on the cake is this gem:

Quote:
U.S. customers should receive an email from Orders@PrintSew.com within 10 minutes, and international customers between 24 and 72 hours!

Nothing says I love you like reminding me what a chore I am to you!!!

The really puzzling part, though, is that I have no trouble buying from BMV with my blasted international credit card.

So why does that other branch, Simplicity/New Look/Burda, have to make it so difficult and expensive for the Non-US buyers?

It makes them look like technological dinosaurs.

The thing I don't understand about Simplicity.com is why they don't have good patterns sale like BMV.

I agree with you. They really don't get it.
We have Simplicity catalogs here in France, but they carry only part of the collection. Designer patterns like Cynthia Rowley's sometimes take a year before they are available here, if at all. In the age of the internet, don't they think we know that we're missing out ? It's as if they think we're less interested in the trendier patterns, which is rubbish! Of course the Cynthia Rowley patterns aren't available as downloads.

Part of the fees is their attempt to recover the extra charges for the international credit card which can be quite a bit. There may even be other fees and charges for doing International business. Even though you print the pattern out you are still paying by credit card which equals fees for the merchant. My best guess is that their shopping cart software is not sophisticated enough to figure it out and/or they don't have the personal to knows how to deal with it. Just a guess but a bummer none the less.

Simplicity UK STILL doesn't have the new Simplicity range even listed on their website after it came out in early December, let alone the new season New Look or Burda.

They do VERY OCCASIONALLY have sales as well as a half-price pattern of the week, which they do not tell anyone about but you only discover by visiting the website. Of course "sale price" means you are still paying twice as much as the Americans.

One thing in their favour is that they actually have VERY reasonable p&p charges within the UK, just barely above cost and the patterns get sent out straight away . It's £0.85 for one pattern, compared to Simplicity US who want to change me £11 for p&p of a SINGLE PATTERN (and to put this in context: the actual postage of one pattern from the US to the UK via USPS is about £2.20, as I know from reimbursing kind US friends who've picked up patterns for me).

I have said this before and will no doubt say it again - in business, if you chose to sell in any market, it is part of doing business to absorb costs at some point. Extra fees for international customers is nothing more than a tariff on the customer - no way 20% is needed to cover costs for the credit cards. I have purchased from several international vendors and have never been charged that extra fee at all, and if it had been there in the info, no order would have been placed. In fact, Euro businesses usually do not charge the VAT for orders from Europe at all, and no extra fees. I have had shipping reduced one time when I ordered from the UK because that vendor wanted to sell, and we arrived at a good postage rate. Good grief.

If another company can do it, then give that other company your business - if they don't want international customers - they need to say so up front. Grrr...

The world s a small place these days, and think how much more sales would be engendered by a positive experience for international customers.

They are basically canceling the appeal of pdf patterns for people,

Important point - you're not even buying a pdf pattern - you're buying a proprietary, one-time, locked "right" to print something that may or may not work. You do not get to download the pdf to print off as many times as possible or even redownload it if your hard drive fails, or heaven forbid, you change sizes.

Everything in this thread reconfirms my feeling that the Big Four are utter dinosaurs and I'll continue to put my sewing time and money into companies that appreciate their customers. There are plenty of pattern companies that are not only offering instant pdf patterns, but also at the same cost for everyone. Let's give them our business instead.

At least Simplicity.com is TELLING you you'll be charged.

I have bought from sites that I did not know were out of the US... only to be slapped w/ extra charges besides the purchase price. And when I called my credit card to complain they said they couldn't do anything as they were international charges either by the country itself or their credit card.
