Also in America there was another sewing machine company in the 1950's that sold the Atlas Deluxe sewing machine which was made by the Japanese Brother Company but they are not connected to our British firm and folded in 1962.

I was able to sew on one and they produce a very nice straight stitch. I didn't have it long enough to do much else with it.

I've got one...a very nice machine. They were made by Brother and oddly, mine has a gold plate on it that says Brother. There were several different models and body types. The one I have and the one in the picture is the same body as my Brother 260....straight stitch only, but a good one and really fast..I love both my turquoise Brother and his cousin, the Pink Atlas!

The one in the picture is missing the spool pin by the bobbin winder on the front base, but the top spool pin looks ok...It is retractable and you need to press the base to get it to full length. You'll still be able to wind bobbins, as you can have the thread go from the top spool down to the the thread holder on the base and up to the winder...these machines aren't fussy!

Those older Japanese machines are awesome. They are very strong, you can get parts for them, and if you oil them, they should never wear out.

I have an Atlas and I LOVE IT! It is my workhorse machine. While I do have electronic and computerized machines, as well, they do not have some of the features of my Atlas. Also, they are noisy and frequently develop issues. The Atlas is whisper quiet and, as long as I clean it and keep it oiled, it keeps going strong. Mine is the one like the Brother Select-o-Matic with multiple stitch patterns.
