I am so upset at the state Kwik Sew patterns is in since McCalls bought them. I was at Joanns last night and the pattern catalogue is barely an inch thick! Plus it is filled with less than thrilling designs. Ughhhh!!!What are they thinking? I have been trying to buy vintage KS patterns off of Ebay but it is just so depressing to think of how far they have gone downhill!

I purchased a couple classic KS patterns but never even look at the new ones. They are horrible-useless hideous craft projects and clothes so unfashionable no one would wear them. Would not be surprised if they just fade into oblivion.

Why would Mccalls even buy them out then? That doesn't make sense--unless they were trying to avoid having another "good" pattern company to buy it (Kwik Sew) and actually be a competitor.

I'm not actually disgusted, but it does rather sadden me, to see what has become of it.

Kwick Sew patterns have always been good ones if wanting to make something crafty or for small children as they have always had some unusual stuff for that, and a lot of good children's patterns too,and keeping them in there over the years, particular like the footie pajamas and baby buntings and such. But that was only a very small part of it.

The other parts of it, is they had way more sewing patterns for men in them than most, also kept and had and kept way longer way more a variety of gymnastic, leotard, and gym kind of patterns for everyone, and nice ladies lingeire and some for guys too and had a lot more outdoor, jacket and camping/sports kind of wear too.

All that so far, does seem to have fallen by the way side and so far looks like just not coming back at all. It looks like now the main target is just more mostly very easy to sew, cutesy "Mommie and Me" kind of stuff instead. Nothing wrong with "Mommy and Me" if that is what someone wants, but all kids grow up and not all adults want to even sew "cutesie" at all, or the most simple shapes of anything, but to me that looks like what the "target" audience is now.

By having it just mostly like that now, I think they have lost a huge part of their audience and purchaser's, and will probably never be getting them back. I can only guess that was a marketing move on purpose though, as those whom bought it, must have thought they would do better with it, more like that instead. I'm kinda thinking that is not going to pan out for them all that great, that way though.

I'm thinking they actually made a huge "marketing error" in whom they even thought their target purchasers even were maybe.

My other thought is maybe they even bought it up, and then are now killing it off on purpose. That is not a uncommon way to do business on something either. At least that way, if something is in the same general target group of sales, you have at least eliminated your competition from getting something instead and going neck to neck with you instead. Just even Microsoft does stuff like that, on all sorts of small software sometimes. So I would not rule that out either.

Does Kwik Sew have two versions of their catalog? It looks like that to me. I have a JoAnns and one independent fabric store locally, plus another independent 60 miles away that I shop at. All three have Kwik Sew patterns. But the JoAnn has the thin book, with little to choose from. The other two stores have a thicker book and a lot more patterns. I've bought KS at all three in the past few months.

I am just saddened by the whole thing.

Kwik Sew patterns, to me, were great patterns for basics, especially fashion knits, basic sportswear, sport and athletic apparel, and lingerie and sleepwear. They were well drafted with the best instructions - way better than the big4 overall.

The Kwik Sew patterns in my stash are the ones that I keep forever! Now I don't know if there will ever be any new ones worth buying. It seems that all that great drafting and instructions is going towards crafts - what a waste!

If you google KwikSew, this is one of the things that will come up. Take a look at that URL. What you are seeing is a business merger.

The nature or quality of the patterns involved is not important. What the investors see is capital and debt ratio, and evidently KwikSew was a solid asset.

Once you buy and trade a business, you can turn it into anything you want.

My own guess is that the late and lamented Kirstin Martinssen left heirs who were not at all interested in continuing the pattern business, but who realized they had inherited a highly marketable commodity.

Actually the person whom was running it or at least sort of the "front man" for it, after she died, seemed to be and I think was her son. I do kind of remember that for a while. During that time, they still seemed to have new and nice and unique patterns coming out, of the same kind of things. Even much like before. So my guess is, when bought in name only, and whomever was even thinking up those and drafting out those, during that interval of time, did not go with and did not come along with the sale at all. That happens with companies sometimes.

When that happens though, and you loose all existing employees, and creative talent, and they don't come along with something like that, then all you got is a name, and that only goes for so far and for so long though. Maybe that person was even her son? Or just any other creative people working there or any other pattern drafters they had before? I hope he or any of her heirs, did really get as much money out of it as possible, in any sale/merger, no matter what has happened to it now, as it seemed that his mother put her life's work into it.
