I finished piecing the front of the boy's graduation quilt: modern square blocks in Marcia Derse modern red/ black/ white/ charcoal gray prints. Since it's a Modern Quilt, gotta do a funky pieced backing. Of course.

My original plan was to do a string pieced 5- point star in a circle and improv a border. All from the precious few scraps leftover from the front.

Nope. Boy said he wanted a Mariner's Compass on the back.

I've NEVER made one before! Scary! Run! Hide!

And how the heck does he know a Mariner's Compass??!!

So....a notoriously fussy pattern with precious few scraps...leaving little room for error. Excellent. I gathered my courage and found an equally bonkers Mariner's Compass block with a sawtooth border in FnP's Star Quilts compilation book at Joann's. Rated " Challenging". Being cheap....er "Fiscally Conservative", I knew I had the pattern at home and made Boy help me dig it out of a stack of FnP's from way back( 2006?). Traced my own papers.

WOOT! Looks like I'll have just barely enough scraps to make the 18" block. Compass portion is half pieced, now.

This is only my second paper piecing adventure, after that storm at sea, last week. ( BTW: looks great!) Very glad I watched those videos you all pointed me to! Thank you!

Well we all want to see the result. This sounds very challenging indeed. Better you than me! Good luck. I'm sure it'll be fabulous!
