Then I found this.

Here's a revelation - Bias binding takes EXACTLY the same amount of fabric as does straight binding. And you do NOT have to start with a square to cut it.
I add a few inches to my straight calculation, because I usually have to use more seams in bias binding. But I start with exactly the same amount as for straight.
And I've bound A LOT of quilts!!!
