Date: 1/23/13 10:08 AM So I've decided to buy a Singer 401A or 500A - I'm searching thrift stores, watching Craigslist, ebay, etc. I also want to get a cabinet for it. Does anyone know the cabinet opening dimensions, so if I find a cabinet with no machine, or with a different model Singer, I can know whether the 401 or 500 will fit?
Also, I read somewhere that the same cabinet fits other Singer models, like the 66, 15-91, 99, 201. Is this correct, and are there any other models I can watch for (if they're in a cabinet?)
Thanks so much. |

Date: 1/23/13 11:14 AM My 401's footprint is 7" x 16 1/2"; the opening on both my cabinets is just slightly larger - about an 1/8" on either side. I have both the Parklane and Monticello cabinets, both with 401's in them.
The mount spacing is 9 3/4" wide - center to center. So looking straight at the front of the machine, on the backside from left to right: 2 1/2" - screw hole/mounting bracket - 9 3/4" - screw hole/mounting bracket - 4 1/4".
I hope this helps!
*Edit to add - I forgot to mention, don't forego a 403 if you come across it. It's every bit as good as the 401's; just make sure it has cam #0 with it. -- Edited on 1/23/13 11:17 AM -- |

Date: 1/23/13 11:43 AM Thank you so much for taking the time to measure your cabinets for me - this is exactly what I need to know. I'll keep my eyes open for a 403 as well. |

Date: 1/25/13 4:29 PM My 401 is in a blonde 50s nondescript cabinet table maybe a cosmopolitan not sure. Whenever I could find othat model online in a cabinet to look at I felt a bit better about my ability to choose a good match. Even so dh removed that hinged black piece with the spring to the right of the opening so the 401 would fit. I found mine online for sale without the machine and it was described as a cabinet a 401 came out of (don't think it did as they would have removed the black piece already). I bought two empty cabinets on ebay and the matching stools at different times for my 201 and my 401. I don't live in an area where there is a lot of sewing machine turnover so had them shipped. The guy who sold both of them did a super job of packaging and was reasonable on the shipping which can be all over the place. Maybe not for everyone but I think I would still be looking for cabinets if I hadn't gone this route. I did try prior to going online but wasn't having any luck and I really really like a sewing machine to be mounted into a cabinet. The matching stools and the machines came from other sellers so I felt really lucky that it all worked out. I did do a lot of research and question asking before I put the new old sewing machine babies with their new old cabinets. |
