Subject: Help on Buying a Serger Date: 1/24/13 1:13 PM

Hi all I am loving this site.

I wondered if anyone could advise me. I have an opportunity to buy a second hand Elna 744 serger. The seller wants $400 for it and its about 10 years old, though in very good condition. What do folks think, is it worth buying or is it overpriced?

Many thanks

Maggie

When was it last serviced and is there a receipt?

If not, then offer $250. You will need to check the manual before purchasing to make sure all the accessories are being included.

Service costs can run over $100.

Hi thank you so much for your advice. After checking with seller it all seemed a bit dodgy to me, she couldn't really tell me the age of the machine! Didn't have the receipt either!

Needless to say I didn't buy it. I've gone instead for an ex demo Elna 654 from my local sewing machine shop. It's 6 months old, has all its bits and pieces and cost $300, and is serviced.

I'll let you know how I get on with it if you like. Thanks again for your help :)

Hi Maggie, I think you made the right choice. I have a 704 DEX Elna about 14 years old, can't get parts for it easily. A $149 service bill last December for a stitch plate and timing issue, the first repair ever, it has been a good machine. I recently purchased a BL Enlighten, but am keeping my 704. Happy serging!
