Pattern Stash Anyone?

Date: 1/27/13 9:04 PM I'm relatively new to these boards and am loving reading all your ideas and suggestions...I'm relatively new to garment sewing, so it's a great thing to hear from people that have "been there and done that". Tonight I was enjoying some sewing room time (made my first hot pad with quilting!!!! I know lots of you probably are thinking...whoppee, big deal...it was to me because I had been intimidated since I got my machine by that quilting foot and the bigger table...LOL); anyway....I decided that my patterns were getting out of hand and all over the place, so I thought it would be a good idea to organize them (yep, I'm one of those uber-organized people). As I said, I'm relatively new to garment sewing, so my question is....how can it be that I have a total of 60 patterns...most of which I have never even opened!!! I know people struggle with fabric stashes, but pattern stashes?? Do you folks have this pattern hoarding tendency also?

My pattern stash numbers 398 at this point (how do I know? Yes, I have them catalogued on my computer). Date: 1/28/13 1:08 AM hee hee You know those pattern cabinets in the sewing stores?? Well I have one FILLED (jam packed) with patterns. And that is after I pulled three boxes of them out to give to my ASG guild. Oh yes, I am a hoarder (of patterns and of fabric).

Date: 1/28/13 6:54 AM I have close to 200 yet somehow feel I have some serious catching up to do. To the OP, be grateful you aren't one of the sewing machine hoarders. Patterns are only $1 or $2 each.

Date: 1/28/13 10:16 AM I have 2 of the sewing store cabinets -- I'd say 1 is completely full of store-bought patterns and the other about half. The other half of the second cabinet is filled with my own custom patterns that I have developed for my clients. I also have a file-box that holds my Jalie patterns and sits on top of the cabinets -- it's about 2/3 full. I can usually find exactly what I need when I want to start a personal project -- yesterday 11 year old DGS was here and asked if I could make him a housecoat. We headed downstairs and found a pattern that was perfect. Now I have to search the fabric stash and see if I can find some appropriate red fabric (his request) -- he wants it reversible like the one I made his Papa. ------ Sheila "sewing very slowly to fill an empty closet" 2012/2013 Stash Busting Sew-Along: 27.25 yards sewn (as of 05/15/13) 21.75 yards purchased (as of 05/15/13)

Date: 1/28/13 10:24 AM Yes, I also have a sewing store cabinet full and a filing cabinet full and 3 totes of mostly self drafted. And that is just the patterns, don't even ask about fabric. I have been sewing since I was 7 and I still have the pattern for the first dress I made for myself, I was 10, and my grandfather gave me the money to buy gloves to wear with it. I think 1959. (I have them too) No I am not a hoarder! (I don't think) I use most of the stuff for the theaters that I sew for. I want to de-stash, and I have given away hundreds of patterns, but they just keep growing new ones (not sure what goes on when the lights are out!)

Date: 1/28/13 10:30 AM I have over 500 patterns and 120 magazines, all tallied as best as possible in an Excel spreadsheet. One of these days I'm going to have to de-stash some individual patterns. I'm more attached to my magazines/books than the patterns. I have been successfully fabric fasting for a couple of months but I don't think I can do a printed materials fast any time soon. ------ I'm finally a blogger! sewming.blogspot.com

I have more than 200. I would have more but 10 years ago I gave up garment sewing for quilting. When I did that I got rid of most of my garment patterns. It didnt' take long, aftger returning to garment sewing, to accumulate a pattern stash. ------ Ada
