The manual for this machine only reccommends size 14 needles. I am assuming they also mean the Universal type.
I questioned this when I first got it, and contacted Brother CS. They told me I should use the 14's. It seems like a large size for finer knits, but I know with a regular serger the size is critical because it can make a difference in how close the needle passes to the looper.
Although I have had my Brother Coverstitch for some time, I am just beginning to use it.
I used it successfully for hemming some cotton knits with the 14 needles, but last night I went to hem a top made from a poly/lycra knit, and had all kinds of problems. I tried rethreading, changing pressure on the foot, etc.with no improvement.
Finally I tried some size 14 stretch needles that I had and they seem to be working. (That was at 12:30 last night :), haven't actually sewn the hems yet) )
Next time I get to JoAnns I will get some ballpoint 12's to try.
Just wondering if anyone else has used different needles in this machine.
