Date: 1/30/13 10:18 AM We've just relocated to South Florida for the winter months and I'm having trouble finding supplies at a reasonable price. In past, I've done a lot of home dec sewing (as a business) but now that I have time, would also like to get back to clothing and accessories for myself.
For now, looking for good local spots for deals (not JoAnn's prices) on zippers, thread, interfacing/stabilizers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Date: 1/31/13 7:31 AM Cynthia's Fine Fabrics in Ft. Lauderdale is (was?) a lovely store. 954-724-2900 is the phone number according to the ballpoint pen they gave me when I was there several years ago (their address is not on the pen, but their website is: www.cynthiasfinefabrics.com).
I shopped at another store somewhere in the greater Ft. Lauderdale area that had cheaper quality fabrics than Cynthia's. The owners did not speak much English, but were nice to deal with. Wish I could remember the name of that place...
If you're on your way to the eastern part of the state, Maitland has a wonderful fabric store too -- right off the highway. It has been there for years; they have a large collection of dance (stretch) fabric. I'm sure you could the name by googling it.
Good luck. |

Date: 2/6/13 9:03 PM I live in south Florida, in Palm Beach County and am also wondering where people get their fabric, not including Joan's. I recently came across a very nice fabric and notions store in south east Boca called Stitchcraft of Boca. I just ordered a bunch of fabric from fabric.com so am waiting until I actually find some time to sew something before buying anymore, but I definitely plan on going back there. |

Date: 2/11/13 11:54 AM I think they made trips to the northeast for those dreamy fabrics!
I will always envy the pockets of the US that have such wonderful selections. You would think with the Fashion Design program in Miami there would be something.
Coming from MT I am most grateful to find there are stores that carry at least notions. I was quite overwhelmed to find a real brick and mortar JoAnns, more than one even, within driving distance not to mention their competition. Its sort of nice not to wait for UPS to deliver a needle or measuring tape.
I have heard Tampa has at least one fabric warehouse- they also have a Fashion BS program.
Recently a Pennie Textile moved into North Port warehouse and from those that have visited, they have some quality garment fabrics.
Hope to get there soon and do my first PR store review. -- Edited on 2/11/13 2:14 PM -- ------ re-living my youth through sewing... |

Date: 2/20/13 3:40 PM Had a chuckle about your comment on NE having such wonderful fabric selections. Of course, NYC is a fabric fantasy- land but I moved here from Boston area and over the years of living there, watched the demise of one great store after another so have had similar envious feelings about other areas. Assumed I'd find unusual fabrics here in S. Florida but so far, I've been disappointed. We're in Ft. Lauderdale area but will be visiting Naples area so I'm hoping to find someplace there just for ideas (and to touch some fabric!) Anyone have any suggestions?
For now, I'm working on my stash and looking forward to return to NE for summer where I'll be filling my suitcase with fabrics for next winter!
PS In fairness, I have found better home dec fabric here than in NE. Both Boca Bargoons and Calico Corners in Boca are fabulous sources, if home dec is your thing. |

Date: 4/16/13 7:29 PM Carol- did you ever visit the fabric stores? Any have fashion fabrics? The one in boca only carries quilting fabrics. The owner told me there is not enough demand to carry fashion fabrics and people's tastes are very specific. |

Date: 4/16/13 8:23 PM Cynthia's has a small selection but quality products and trims.
Once Upon a Quilt in Davie has primarily quilting fabrics, further south you'll find a better selection. There is downtown Miami where you can find almost anything you need, some cheap, some very expensive.

Date: 4/18/13 9:50 PM While vacationing in Miami, I went to a very high end fabric store called Rex fabrics somewhere in Little Havana area. Just gorgeous. They have a website. |
