For ex if I wanted all my horse designs to come up just put in horse instead of now going to all my various folders that might have horse designs. As I have them divided up by free, paid for, vendor etc. I think I'm answering my own question as they would probably have to have the name in the file name of whatever your searching for. Most embroidery files are numbered not named. I had thought to try to do something in an access clone of Microsoft office call Open Office but don't know the program well enough to know if I can manipulate it to do what I want. I realize would probably have to make new "picture" files of all the designs and rename them as well and that would be a ton of work, so it's probably not worth it. Although the embroidery design sites have search engines for their designs and they don't always have alpha names for the files. Computer experts? ------ quiltingwolf.blogspot.com

I could NOT FIND ANY OF MY EMBROIDERIES ON MY COMPUTER!! It took me a good 30 minutes til I finally did....I am NEVER messing with it again! ------ Cathryn

So for 5D there is a an area that lets you put a note so if you put horse in the note file you can search in 5D on the tag line you put in your notes file. Moved embroideries mysteriously being relocated just a windows search on the old style *.pes (or whatever extension) that will bring up the location of every embroidery. Otherwise you would have to rename your files to include something descriptive for your search.

Not sure if you have to rename them which wouldn't be that much of a problem if I didn't have 50K designs. But for example on EL you can search by subject but all their designs are numbered. From reading, it looks to have pre made categories and then you drag your files into them to assign them. Or create your own categories. It isn't clear if you can assign more than one category. But that site is very good with customer questions so if you call I bet someone would help. Certainly easier than setting up your own database. I chuncked out hours over a period of months to fine tune mine. It helps to start with a system- IF that is the type of person you are. If had 2 machines with 2 formats so I had 3 main folders- one was JEF, one PES and one MULTI. Then I organized those in subfolders just like many of the purchased CDs do. If I bought online I would drag it to the folder that was most descriptive. Like Font, Animal, Insect, Cooking, etc. When I accumulated enough files and had time, I made sub-folders under those topics like Insect--> Butterfly or Cooking--> Vegetables, etc. Of course you could have made Food and then Food--> Vegetables so that's based on how your brain organizes things. I had another main folder called Projects and then put names under them like Projects--> Tina or Church or Jacob, etc. When I tweaked/edited a main file I would save it under the person's or the charity's name. It helped me remember what I already did for them and I found I went back to them and tweaked for others so it was easy to find those I used most often. If you start organized, its easier to stay organized. The folder names are your categories and when software eventually does start categorizing then your existing folders will be picked up by the software and kept by your system. It took 30 yrs to get to photo facial recognition so there is hope for design recognition. Photo files are no longer propietary. Cameras now take pictures in a format that our computers recognize, instead of being propietatry like in the early 90's- when we needed special software or a viewer to see them. Same with video cameras- in early 2000 we couldn't always just see a video that someone gave us- they had to put it into a multi viewer format. Our computers (mostly) do that and now we see pictures and video without special software for the most part. If we ever get to the point that the companies who make embroidery machines also let our computers view the embroidery image files without proprietary programs then the software market can make programs to organize those files using categories and tags and image sorting. But right now it is quite costly to go to every company and get their permission and not all of them all willing to play nicely with each other. ------ re-living my youth through sewing...

I also use Open Office and at times prefer it to the name brand Apple and Windows software. But it doesn't matter which one you use to create a database- it just is a lot of work plus there's the learning curve if you have never built one before. ------ re-living my youth through sewing...
