Back fit question
What causes my top to tighten and seem small when I reach out or up?

This is cross posted on the beginner's forum, but it might fit better here so I am reposting.

I'm taking Plus-size pattern fitting on Craftsy and couldn't wait for the Vogue pattern to come. So, I started with a tunic top from Simplicity.

I cut it out, made the adjustments etc. Overall it's not bad, but the armholes feel too small when I bring my arms forward. While I feel the tightness at the back of the armscye I wondered if I was a little to eager with the chopping during fitting, or if I should have added some width to the back.

So I guess the short question is, what is this telling me about the fit of my garment? Do I need a broad back adjustment or something else?

If you paid for the Craftsy class, why don't you post your question on that board too. It can't hurt.

Hi Plumfan, If you either put a pic or a link to an online pic in a post we can see where the wrinkles are, and you may be able to get more help and some input on the right adjustment.

Hi Plumfan- Welcome to PR!
I enrolled in the Craftsy class with Barb. She was great anwering my questions. She went into altering quite a few things besides just the pattern that comes with the class so if you post it in a general way I am sure other Crafty classmates will benefit from her answer.

But your post on PR is related to a pattern that is not being taught by the Craftsy Class so you did fine to post it here.

For questions like this, it really helps us if you can post a link to the pattern number and upload a picture of what the garment problem looks like either on you or on a dressform.

It could be an armhole circumference issue, a broad back issue, a back length issue, a rounded back issue, a forward shoulder issue or a pattern ease issue.
Seeing a picture of the stress folds gives us an idea of what might correct it.

I also have this problem with wovens and don't know what my expectation should be concerning reaching forward before the back pulls. It does seem like I should be able to drive without too much pull. Looking forward to seeing some answers.

Wow! At a glance that looks like it may be a great resource.

I will try to wrangle the husband into taking a picture or two tomorrow.

Some of us have learned how to juggle the camera with a mirror. You have to adjust yourself to where the mirror picks up the problem and snap it over your shoulder for a back view. Keep the other arm relaxed at your side so we can compare. And if you have fold lines try to make sure they are visible. Hang in there!

Hi KathySews. I know what you mean about driving and that back pull! One thing that helped me is to find patterns with a back yoke when I am using a woven. It fits my shoulders yet gives me freedom of movement around the arms.
Using woven fabrics that are combined with spandex can also make reaching a lot more comfortable.

What a comprehensive resource! Every bit as useful as any basic sewing book I've ever seen. I just saved it to my Tips & Tutorials notebook on Evernote. Thanks a bunch!
