Machine Abuse Ugly Accidents

The heavy webbing strap came off, while on his way home from school. Hipster bag has a life time warranty, but that involves sending pictures of the bag to the Hipsters in San Fran to decide if it warrants them honoring the warranty. Checked the bag....no rips or tears. The stitching had come out! Huh?? Ironed on a twill reinforcement patch as perforations from the previous stitching. Loaded up the PQ1500S with nasty heavy upholstery thread. Sewed the super heavy duty wide webbing strap back on....with extra reinforcement. Proud of myself, I pulled the bag from the machine to check the stitching on the inside of the bag. Not only had I sewed the strap on to the side of the bag, I'd also sewn it to the plastic and memory foam padded internal laptop sleeve! It took 90 min and broke a seam ripper(!) removing the upholstery thread. Used an exacto knife to cut the stitches apart. I resewed it......making sure NOT to sew the laptop sleeve. The entire time, the PQ1500S purred right along. Boy's bag is back in service. ------ Brother Innovis NX650Q; Brother Nouvelle 1500; Brother CS6000i; Brother 1034D

So annoying! Isn't it nice to know that the machine handled it. I am sure your son is happy you fixed it.

I had to laugh at this term as abuse + modern machines with some of the things he or I would want mended/sewn at times used to result in a repair trip before the straight stitcher or the vintage machines came here. Now any nasty projects go to it. I really like the modern straight stitcher for heavy stuff or if I want to sew really fast like home dec or machine quilting a piece of fabric. They don't seem to mind what sort of thick thread you use like the upholstery weight you mentioned and I think the needles are lots stronger. A good thing as I feed mine all sorts of factory cone weights. The persnickety modern machines I own have to be fed very nice threads and don't tolerate machine abuse. Lol! The janome straight stitcher here has yet to go in for a repair despite having to plow through all sorts of ugly situations. Love these modern straight stitchers and the heavy duty thread cutter and the "machine abuse" they can handle.

I'm considering this machine, and as all the reviews are older, I was wondering how well it held up and if people still liked theirs...and that sounds like exactly the type of sewing and the results I've gotten periodically!! Date: 1/31/13 9:02 AM Not only did this machine handle the badness, it did so with a needle far too " delicate" for the job! I should have switched out the the jumbo 16 or harpoon 18's...but was lazy and figured I'd "just do this" before changing out the measly 11 dulled by paper piecing. Soooooo.....my machine sewed through all of that with a too small, dull needle, and wicked coarse rope.....er " thread". And was able to maneuver a large professional bike courier bag within the harp. To reward Marv the machine, he got an at home spa treatment: cleaned, oiled, new needle. I, too, bought the straight stitch beast (used) because the computerized machine simply cannot handle the ugliness we throw at it. Computerized's a bit of a prissy Hot House Flower, that one. But, I use the PQ1500S probably 95% of the sewing I do. Perfect top stitching. I shopped for the PQ1500s for about a year. Just couldn't bite on the retail.I asked Dealer if any used/trades in stock? Yep! Stuck in a back room. A hidden gem.
