Hi everyone- I have enjoyed reading some of the posts about your stashes :-). Made me feel better about not touching mine for three years.

So I am now getting into sewing for real, and fabrics that I have been dying to use are on sale. But I don't yet know what I will end up using them for- I just know I am crazy about them and want more (I made curtains from the line and love love them.)

When you buy fabrics before having a specific project, how do you decide how much to buy?

I would sometimes look at a pattern, or guess.

No criticism intended (print and keep in your purse) --- http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/estimating-fabric-yardage-needs-for-common-misses-.html

You could do the same for curtains, pillow, and table cloths....rough measure and add to the above chart.

Try to be conservative, or you may find yourself with more fabric than you will ever use.

I have have accumulated so much that this will be my fourth year of not buying fabric and making do with what I have!

3 yards.

3 yards is what I need for a dress or a jacket or pants. If I decide I want to make a skirt, I probably only need 2, but if I'm not sure, I get 3.

I use this great Yardage Estimate Table, cannot recall the source, but I agree with the numbers!
