Date: 2/2/13 5:25 PM I am sure one of the experts here can help me.
I am making a cushion for my window bench.
It looks like this Ottoman Cover.

Can I make this binding using straight grain?
Or do I have to make the binding in the bias??
Thanks

Bias takes a lot of fabric if you are trying to use a nice piece for your cover and save on the binding.
In throw pillows some woven fabrics will work on the grain and others will drive you crazy creating little folds. Heavier things like canvas types are harder to ease in.
If you want a contrast, you may save $$ by buying a solid or contrast off a remnant table or at a drapery outlet, then cutting on the bias.
Hancock's for instance, has nice discount flatfolds in upholstery/drapery that JA's does not.
Another hint is use clothesline for the cording, which ends up cheaper than regular cording.

I just perfomed a test and it works on the grain.
I will save the fabric for other things.
Thanks

Date: 2/4/13 3:45 PM On grain usually works, you just have to clip the seam allowance as you round corners. ------ Pfaff 138-6

Date: 2/4/13 4:47 PM I have done cushions professionally for designers and the only time you need to cut it on the bias is if you are using it on a curved shape, or if the pattern such as a stripe or check calls for it. ------ MartiP |
