Date: 2/4/13 9:55 AM As much as I CRAVE a TOL serger, this is not a good time to make that extravagant a purchase. So, I'm making a list of nifty notions to jazz up my sewing life! These are not must-have, basic gadgets. Instead, I'm looking for items that make you think, "Dang! Why didn't I think of that?".
Evidently I don't get out much because this is an example of what's on my list so far! I'll use it for pins.

Date: 2/4/13 10:05 AM Oh yeah, the suction-cup magnet. I've had one of those for years.
I keep mine on the bed of my machine and keep needles and the itty-bitty Bernina screwdriver (for changing the needles) on it.
Handy item, that. I also have one stuck to the side of my serger and have needles on it and my long tweezers.
I love that the new Bernina 7s have a magnetic surface on the body for holding such things. Wish I had that.
I also love these Micro Tip Scissors.
I have lots of notions because I love gadgets and anything that tamakes sewing more pleasurable.
I'm sure I'll be able to come up with more images of can't-live-without-stuff.
And, I also like these Comfort Handle Razor Edge Scissors
These are wonderful for applique as they're very sharp and really comfortable.

Here are some things I have treated myself with:
Third hand (?)- it clamps onto your table and grips fabric, thread, etc...so you can work with both hands.
Wooden cone thread holder.
Large sheets of tracing paper- recommended by Susan Khaljie in the Couture Dress class.
U-shaped double quilting pins- see above.
Scissors/shears- appliqué, serrated, embroidery.

2. the needle threader/needle holder combo gizmo I bought at Home Sew online. Holds the needle when you replace a needle and you then know it is getting up far enough and you don't drop it down the machine.
3. My little Gingher scissors - both straight ones and curved.
4. The Kwik Klip tool - great tool for safety pin removal. Handy.
5. brushes for bobbin area cleaning
6. Mini Vac set for my vacuum so I can clean the machines and my computer. Works great.
7. Singer Dressmaker's Transfer paper.
8. My surgical clamp. But this is my favorite all around gizmo for about one hundred uses around the house. Mine is now about 48 years old.

Date: 2/4/13 12:39 PM I second Kai Scissors. Hands down the best scissors I have ever used. Even the small snips can handle bulky fabric all the way to the tips.
I also love the Bernina Swiss Army Knife. It not only really cool, but I do use it when I travel to sewing conference (checked baggage, of course)
Hubby had a hard time finding it, but our local dealer carries it now.

Date: 2/4/13 12:59 PM First, what is a TOL serger? I've seen the term TOL in other threads but do not know what it is.
My latest 'gadget' is a make-up brush to clean lint out of my machines. It picks up so much and much better (and cheaper) than the canned air and better than the nylon brushes that came with the machines. |

Side note - when I first joined Pattern Review, everyone was abuzz about the PR fabric shopping trip. I thought, "Holy moly, these ladies went all way to the People's Republic of China to buy fabric!" Haha ------
