Serger or upgrade?
procraftinate Intermediate Member since 9/12/12 Posts: 31	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 2/5/13 3:40 PM A few months ago I bought a Babylock BL9 and the dealer said I can "upgrade" within a year if I have all original stuff, and my recept. Basicly I would trade up using my machine and what I paid for it as a down payment, paying the difference for whichever machine I decide on (either the Anna or Molly model). I am also thinking of getting a serger (Brother 1034D) I will probably only get enough back to get one or the other, which would you choose? Sometimes I sew alot sometimes I hardly sew at all, lately I have been sewing alot. Either way I have to wait until I get my tax return, but probably won't be able to do both. (the bulk of taxes will be going to a new roof this year) -- Edited on 2/5/13 3:41 PM --

Some BL sewing machines have an overlock foot (the S foot) that cuts the fabric while making an overcast stitch. That will get you through for awhile until you save up for a serger. I have the BL9 as my secondary. It work but you will have a BIG smile and enjoy sewing on an upgraded machine. ------ re-living my youth through sewing...

Date: 2/6/13 12:03 PM If you're asking should you have only a sewing machine or only a serger...then sewing machine is my vote. If you already have another sewing machine, then go for the serger. I think both are a necessity in a sewing room, but if you can only have one, then a sewing machine is more of a necessity. ------ I heart Panzy, Pfaff Creative Performance, the sewing machine love of my life! You can finish seams in one of several ways without needing a serger (a serger just finishes the seams faster and more professionally). Also, many sewing machines have an optional "overcasting foot" which makes a , I guess one could say, mock-serged edge. Or I think it's more accurate to say a mock-overlocked stitch. At any rate, it'll do the job for you.
