Uggg this quilt is going to take FOREVER! WHAT was I thinking???

I did get all the background squares/rectangles cut. YAY! That wasn't so bad....kind of the calm before the storm.... There are 128 swirls. I am going to go shopping for some more fabrics, I am not liking the pastels I had mixed with the CRAZY brights. I LOVE the crazy brights! It is going to be a wild colorful quilt! But OH MAN those swirls are time consuming! They are sewn in pairs, right sides of fabric together, with water soluble thread. You use template to trace onto wrong side of top rectangle, sew on traced line, cut excess with pinking shears, turn right side out, press....spray with water to dissolve thread, PRESS til dry, separate, then put onto muslin with traced swirl as a guide, PRESS into shape, starch, PRESS dry, THEN put onto background. wow: Repeat 64 times......UGGGGGG this is going to take at least a month just to piece the top...then there is the border.. ------ Cathryn

Date: 2/7/13 8:27 AM I posted it on the 'whats everyone working on thread ', it is a 90x110" quilt, will be the biggest one I have made! So far my points don't meet exactly in the middle, but as long as they are ALL the same I am not going to worry about it! I'd have to re-make my template and the muslins to make them bigger.....not worth it. ------ Cathryn

I think it was from my costume/dress making days. If I had 100 costumes to make, I wouldn't let myself set ANY aside once they were started. That way I KNEW they would all get done, plus I just don't have the space to store unfinished costumes AND all the things for the ones not even started yet. It is such a HUGE mental commitment to make something, I can't shift back and forth easily between things. I was not working from ready made patterns with step by step instructions, I had to make my own. Figuring out the steps to construct them was always on my mind, I can't be planning how to get the opening/fasteners on a top AND how to get the angle I need on a waistband at the same time. So it just made sense to finish one to 'stage ready' before moving on the the next. There was ALWAYS a looming deadline, I never had time to set something aside to work on later. It is different for me with quilting. Different mentality. I quilt because I REALLY really enjoy it. When things get tedious, I CAN set it aside. That was not an easy thing for me to do at first, but it is so incredibly FREEING to finally allow myself to do it! I have my 1st quilt class this Saturday! I am so excited! I already have Betty packed in her suitcase ready to go. I will be working on that quilt too. It is much smaller and really a no-brainer, so maybe that will be enough to relieve the tedium of the swirls. ------ Cathryn

I don't have as many fat quarters as I thought I did...I have some other fabrics I can use, but I am not so sure about softer pastely fabrics with the BRIGHT fat quarters I have! I am going to get some more fabrics. I don;t want any regrets with this quilt! And yes I am doing the multicolored border and binding to match. I am cutting them out at the same time as the swirls. What I SHOULD have done is cut a 2" x16" strip for the scrappy Trip quilt too, and now that I have thought of it I will do that too. I am going to have some bright colorful quilts!
