I bought my Sapphire 850 in 2007 when they first came out and wondered if anyone else has one and does FMQ on it with success. I am just trying to learn and am having a terrible time. Is it just me or does the sm have tension problems?? Help!!

Going to kick this up so people see it and add that tension tweaking is something that most FMQuilters need to do - at least at first and thread experimentation.Good luck!

what are your problems precisely? There are a lot of problems that everyone has with FMQ so it's hard to know if it's just the usual problems or machine specific problems.

Mostly uneven pulled stitches on the bottom, but I guess this is common for people new to FMQ. Any other Sapphire 850 owners out there who can tell me which settings on your machine work the best and also which thread you use. I even had my bobbin case replaced at the dealers recommendation, so I don't know . . . .

If you have a second bobbin case, you can tweak the tension on the bobbin for FMQ. Some people just use the regular case and loosen tension - the bobbin tension may be pulling that thread down and sometimes I found I had to put the top tension at a ridiculously high tension setting on my Viking to do FMQ. At Superior Threads, Bob the thread guru says that today's machines are setting the bobbin tension very high, and I believe him. If you are comfy with setting your bobbin tensions, go for it - otherwise, a second bobbin case is a good idea. I bought a second case for my Janome and my Pfaff, although I don't use the second Pfaff one, and the Janome one they sell for specifically FM isn't all that different. I use it all the time as I am too lazy to take it out of the machine and I am ;doing regular stitching of binding now. No problem.

Come on people - there are Viking sewers out there with Sapphires who do great FMQ!!!!!

I have the Viking 870 but don't even know how to do FMQ

My first thought was -- make a SMALL quilt sandwich and do your testing on this.

My machine sets all the tension itself -- I'm SID on the enormous Easy Street Mystery Quilt right now (taking a mini-break)... and looked through my book

I don't know how similar these machines are? Drop Feed dogs (I'm sure you have done that!)

**My machine does NOT like 100% cotton thread!! Maybe try the Coats and Clark XP poly coated cotton? Cheap but my Viking likes it... I wish I could be of more help -- Please let me know if I can look up anything in my manual, but it really doesn't say much other than use the FMQ feet, drop the dogs... ?? And try a real small sample quilt until you loosen the tension and get it working?

If you move your quilt too fast you can get those problems as well, especially if you're going in a tight curve. I don't have your machine, but I've had those problems more with heavier weight threads than with lighter weight threads.
