Date: 2/8/13 11:04 PM I recently started sewing and came across the book Singer Perfect Plus by Kathleen Cheetham. I made a muslin of the fly-front pants with an elastic waist. I am not crazy about the look of a full elastic waistband and I kept the darts rather than leaving them out. The pants fit great and I'm excited that with only a bit of tweaking these could become my first TNT pattern.
So, I'd like to put in a partial elastic waistband. The original already has 2 elastic pieces, each one about 4 inches long starting at the side seam and wrapping around to the back.
I want to basically make the front the same as the back so I have a flat, non-elasticized bit of waistband at the center front like at the center back.
My question is should I use 2 pieces of elastic each going about 1/4 away around the waist equally at the side seams? Or should I use 4 pieces in the same place only each side of the seam will have it's own bit of elastic?

Date: 2/9/13 10:10 AM If you go with 2 pieces of elastic, one per side, there will be less bulk (they will join at the side seam and elastic gets bulky). This sounds like a perfect solution. Some time ago I had a couple pair of pants that had elastic located just at the side seams. It gave a very nice appearance. ------ "We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are." Anais Nin

Date: 2/10/13 1:36 PM I am with Eleanor, go with the two pieces of elastic. I also hate the bulk of elastic.
Congratulation on a good fitting pair of pants. ------ Ada

Date: 2/12/13 11:36 PM It worked. I still need to hem the pants but everything else is done. I used one piece of elastic at each side. Each end of the elastic ended at a dart and I stitched the middle of the elastic at the side seam.
My husband said they looked like pants you buy at the store. :) |
