Today I tried on an amazing (but too large in the bodice) vintage dress that had no tags and appeared to be handmade (even the cuffs were hand-sewn). The pocket detail blew me away!
Sorry for the low quality, low-light cell phone pics. That is one inset pocket that runs the entire width of the skirt front, and the pocket bands/peaks are reinforced with interfacing. The fabric behind the pocket is kind of pleated @ the waist seam. The dress has a straight skirt, back zipper that extends from low-hip level to shoulder blades, a shawl collar, and cuffed kimono sleeves. I can frankstein some patterns together for the bodice but it'd be nice if this is an actual pattern somewhere... and jeez louise, that pocket.

Date: 2/9/13 4:02 PM Looking at the shawl collar, sleeves, and bodice, I would hazard a guess that this is a McCall's pattern from the early 1950s. I like to collect McCalls from that time period, but I haven't actually seen this particular pattern (yet). Could be one of the other companies though - I've seen Simplicity patterns with a pocket across the front, and Simplicity did some "McCalls" flavored patterns back then.
The hem looks a little short though if it's a McCalls from that time period - could you tell if it's been taken up?

Date: 2/9/13 9:24 PM I don't remember anything from the hem catching my eye but it's possible it was altered somewhere along the way. Are there any specific terms used to describe this style of pocket? I've tried searching the vintage pattern wiki with overwhelming results. And it's the pocket detail that I'm seeking...
