I need help. Has anyone completed scarf A from simplicity pattern 2170.
I am using crinkled gauze chiffon type cloth. Very thin material.
I tried to finish the edges with a serger narrow hem. The stiches pulled away from the cloth. Tried rolled hem on the sewing machine. The material was cut on a bias, and it has made it so difficult. Can anyone help me. Thanks

The serged edge will pull away when the thread is too heavy for the fabric.
Lengthen your stitch length, or try a 2 thread rolled hem. If that doesn't work fuse in a small hem with some 1/4" wide Steam A Seam lite. You can leave the fused hem, or you can turn it up again and stitch.

Dianne S.
Thanks for your help.
I am using maxi lock 100% spun polyester serger thread.
I have tried all serger settings. short stitch length, widen stitch bite, etc.
The pattern calls for using a lettuce edge to finish the edges.
I tried the rolled hem on my sewing machine, using the rolled hem foot. That did not work well, because, as I stated, it was cut on a bias and is a crinkly/gauze. The material does not press well, so I haven't tried the seam finish you recommended.
I am frustrated because the cloth was expensive for me. I usually buy when it goes on sale.
I believe I choose them most difficult style of the pattern. Scarf A on simplicity pattern 2170.

Does your serger have a 2 thread rolled hem, vs a 3 thread? and use a long stitch, at least 3. You might also try a lighter thread, like a rayon embroidery thread. I serge silk chiffon at work, and the trick is the longer stitch, and the lightweight thread helps too.
Also you mentioned lettuce edge. You can do that on your sewing machine with a narrow zigzag stitch.

Thanks for the info. I did not mention that I got my my serger around 1995. It is a brother 925D. It is a 3/4 thread. Not even on the market anymore. It has been well used. Basically for finishing seams.
The few times I did use the rolled hem or narrow hem was for making home decor items. Curtains, napkins, pillows, etc.
So this is actually the first time using it on thin fabric.
I have put the scarf aside for now. Over the coming week-end I do plan on checking to see if the rayon machine embroidery thread helps.
Again, Thanks

To Dianne S.
Thanks for suggesting the use of rayon embroidery thread. I threaded the machine with rayon thread, tried the narrow hem/rolled edge. It Worked. Thanks, msjen
