What kind of animal eats chili peppers? planning this year's garden

Date: 2/10/13 9:21 AM I used to have fabulous container gardens when I lived in apartments, but haven't managed more than a couple tomatoes since I moved to my house. The problem is the animals. There aren't too many critters snacking on a third floor balcony, but at ground level it's like I am setting out an open buffet. They eat everything, tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, no matter what I plant it gets eaten before I can harvest it. Something out there has a real southwestern appetite, even cilantro and hot peppers get stripped off the vine. I have a plan for curtailing the free range snacking, but keep wondering what animal would be eating my chili peppers. Has anyone else had this problem? It's definitely an animal and they really like the red ones. (The green jalapenos were left intact.) Any ideas? Thanks!

I had one in my garden in Dallas and it even stripped the leaves.. Would help if we knew where you lived...

Not just the chilis, the whole plant and more than one. After a whole plant went completely missing, she found just the very top of another sticking out of a gopher hole. The occasional bear, moose or coyote, but no iguanas. My first guess was probably the birds because they took the red peppers and left the green ones, but I'm not sure. Most of the plants were either stripped of leaves or completely gone and a bird isn't likely to make off with the whole plant. Also, I had the peppers in big pots on the patio. It wouldn't stop an animal from climbing in for a snack, but they wouldn't have been able to burrow up through the pavers and the pot. I'm hoping to cage everything this year. It'll be a pain for weeding, but I'm getting tired of slaving away all summer and having the animals make off with my veg.

He got a stick, reached over the fence, hooked one of the vines, and got the pumpkin up high enough until he could grab ahold of it. I very ungracefully screamed at him from the window. Something like I was gonna call the cops. He ran away but returned the pumpkin later. Anybody think the cops in Jersey City were going to respond to this? We garden organically...I think the 'Deer Off' contains coyote urine, eggs, etc. Ick but it works. You don't spray it on your plants but make a perimeter where you want to keep them out.
