Coverstitch binding 2340 Placemats, stretchy, wavy, oh my!

They still look nice but I wonder if A. I cut the binding strips with the stretch. Should I have cut them against the stretch?? B. Should I have adjusted the differential feed on the machine? C. Should I have slightly stretched the bib material to match the stretch being placed on the binding by the binder? D. How on earth would one end the coverstitch binding on an oval placemat or a baby's bath towel or washcloth?

Unfortunately, I don't think stretchy binding runs very well through a binder. It would only have been worse if you stretched the object out too. To end a circular binding, I'd probably just cut it and leave a raw edge. Another option would be to measure the perimeter, make a circular binding to size, pin, and coverstitch. Similar to attaching a sweatshirt band in the round.

Yes; adjust the differential feed slightly. C. No, let the binder do the stretching. D. Easiest way is to stop at the last 1" or so, and bring the needle threads to the bottom of the fabric to lock the coverstitch (release thread tensions, raise presser foot, swipe something thin under the foot to catch the needle threads, pull thread loops towards you for a few inches and cut the loops. Pull fabric straight back until the needle threads are pulled to the bottom of the fabric; cut the looper thread.) Cut the excess length of binding allowing enough to turn in the raw edge 1/4" or so. Use sewing machine and straight stitch to sew the last 1" of binding to the placemat. E. Give the binding a shot of starch before putting into the binder; this will stiffen it up and make it much easier to bind. -- Edited on 2/14/13 2:37 PM -- ------ I heart Panzy, Pfaff Creative Performance, the sewing machine love of my life!
