 2 members like this. Do you all plan several projects ahead? Design a couple of projects ahead or just fly by the seat of your pants? I've had in my head several projects I've wanted to do for a few years now waiting for my skills to catch up. I feel pretty confident in applique so I could think of doing some of them. But the ideas keep coming and I'm getting a little overwhelmed. How you you plan on what your going to do? I mostly work on one project at a time, I wish I could work on several but I put so much into each one I can't multi-quilt. Have to have one project in my head at a time. My current wish/to do projects after the trees:
wolf wall hanging kit
Celtic knot quilt or wall hanging
fantasy quilt or wall hanging
Dragon wall hanging
wall hanging of the inside of Led Zepplin's 4th album
Mariner's compass
Stonehenge Wave's pattern
husband quilt (haven't decided on theme)
this stuff alone would take me the next 18 months - 2 years. But then new stuff comes a long that I like. Also sometimes I have a hard time keeping it simple and plan these outrageous labor intensive projects that never wind up getting done as it's just too much work for me or will take too long. I sew an avg of maybe an hour a day. But sometimes skip a day. Or get multiple hours on the weekend, but that's rare.

1 member likes this. I have a To Do list on the wall in my sewing room. My projects don't read as challenging or inspiring as yours; the list reads like this:
Finish Ugly Fabric Challenge for June guild meeting
Make a twin quilt for second bedroom
Make another queen quilt for our bed
Make 2 more baby quilts for folks at work who keep having babies
Make table runner for kitchen table
Sigh. My problem is that I truly struggle to make fabric choices. I just placed an order with Fabric.com for the queen quilt - and it took me 6 hours to choose just 3 fabrics. Swear to XXX. So sad. If I could choose fabric faster, I could get to sewing faster!
And I don't work on more than two projects at one time. Makes too much of a mess in my sewing room.
My other problem is that I also go sideways and work on AG doll clothes and scrapbooking.

Date: 2/11/13 6:49 PM With me it's not so much a bucket list of quilts as I see something in a magazine or in the quilt shop and I may buy fabric thinking I will give it a whirl. I've stopped that a bit now but I was going through the latest quilty (digital issue) and they had some very nice fairly simple patterns. I had to mark them and add them to my to do list |

Date: 2/11/13 9:22 PM I have a list... A long list and several projects are very very labor intensive. Most of my current projects are from patterns. But I would love to design my own work. I'd love to get EQ as I think it would be easier to design and calculate yardages. ------

Date: 2/11/13 11:06 PM I don't plan ahead. I mean, I DO, but not on purpose. I just get all of these ideas, and I know they would be wonderful quilts. Not that I am quilting these days - I had one good day and then a ton of headaches. Very annoying.
These are some of the quilts swirling around my head:
A western quilt - I am collecting fabrics of the Old West.
A chicken quilt - I collect chicken fabrics. I would actually like to raise chickens but DH says no chickens.
A snack quilt - with some of the cute snack fabrics of recent years.
A farm quilt - I am collecting fabrics. This IS Wisconsin, after all.
An NFL quilt - I bought fat quarters of all of the teams.
Some more jelly roll race quilts.
A Kaleidoscope quilt with some ombre batiks I bought on sale.
I have a list, somewhere in this mess. It is not my fault. I see some fabric and it tells me what it wants to be. ------

This sounds just like me! I've got so many ideas swirling around in my head that I could retire today and stay busy for the next 20 or 30 years without needing any more 
I haven't had much time for a couple of years for any crafting, but hopefully work will slow down a bit for a few months and I can play a little.
I'm trying to combine some ideas - a Craftsy class on log cabin backgrounds and some beading and embellishing techniques together to make a Spring quilt that I've decided I need. Hopefully it will be finished before Autumn  ------

Date: 2/13/13 9:09 PM I use Quilt Design Wizard to make future projects. Some day I'll have the EQ7 or 8 or 9... I start with a wall hanging and see if the quilt ends up the size I have in mind or not. If not, I change it to either a crib size or customize the size by adding a row wider and a row longer. Once the size is decided, I then add borders. Next I TRY to pick a pattern. I might choose a pinwheel, or a star or a 4 patch. I then go to the fabric choices and change the colors of my designs. Over and over and over. By this time I have worked on this design for at least 20 minutes and usually well over an hour. If I like it, I keep it and give it a name. If not, I delete it and start over. Sometimes I like the design, but not the colors. So, I copy it and change the colors and name this one similar to the first one. For example pinwheel1 and pinwheel2. I also print the pattern design and add to my list of future choices. So far I think I have 4 of them designed that I want to do.
That is one way I do things. I also read PR and see who is doing what design and does it appeal to me or not. If so, I study the pattern. If not, I try to find something else. I have a few patterns here, but not many. I have some magazines, and some books. I have one book with 238 possible choices in it. Still thinking about some of those in that book. If I ever decide to make one of those, I will color it to see if I like the way it looks.
On another project I printed everything out and made a smaller sample of it to see if I would like it or not. I should have made it larger, as the sample was too small to work with!!! One inch triangles are crazy...  ------
Quilting is relaxing to me. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors.
