Please suggest jacket for this dress Help figure out how much fabric to buy

Date: 2/12/13 6:51 PM I want to make in a color block style this dress I will be using this and this fabric. View B, petite size 18 to fit my hips. I would like to make a jacket to go with it but I am open to suggestions. I was thinking of Petite Plus pattern 202, view B, size 14 to fit high bust and grading out to 14-16 to fit tummy/hip area. One thing I do not like about the jacket in view B is the 4 buttons. I love jackets that have 3 or best of all only one button as I don't like feeling wrapped up like a mummy. The hardest part would be to figure how much of the darker color I need for the sides of the dress. I would also like suggestions on whether I should try to color block the jacket at all. I prefer to keep my jackets short. Simplicity 2183 is a great little jacket (sort of like a bolero) with a single just-meets closure. Very easy - my lining was my muslin (or should I say my muslin became my lining? LOL) - plus I tried out a single sleeve for width/length. You could even do one of the views w/ waist detail - and it would show under the jacket.

I agree Bolero jackets can be quite flattering to us. For this outfit, I am looking for something much more tailored given the wool suit weight fabric I'll be using. Maggie

I was also thinking the jacket might be more useful if it was only one color. Any input on how to guesstimate how much I would need of the darker fabric for the dress? As the fabric is a wool it will have a nap, so you cannot cu ti on the cross grain.

That dress doesn't take very much fabric-just a little over a yard of 60" I would say you need at least 4 yards for both (of 60") and maybe 5 for sure to account for nap. I have made that dress alot and want to color block one out of a knit for this spring. Are you going to line the dress? I can only see the one fabric but it looks very nice! HTH
