Hello everyone. I am new around here. I was wondering if anyone has ever ordered from Spoonflower before? I have done a search and can't find a mention of them. I found their web site and them have some very interesting fabrics including designing your own, however, I am a little wary. They seem perfect for finishing off a bathroom that has been unfinished for over a year because I can't find the right fabric in the right color that isn't over the top floral.... I have had such a hard time I have considered finding a fabric then re-painting the entire bathroom.

I've ordered swatches from them--HIGHLY recommend! Fast turn around time (they don't print the fabric until it's ordered) and great customer service. :)

I have. I got several yards of kona cotton in a geek print to make a portal pillowcase for my grandson.

The fabric is absolutely wonderful. You need to be aware that it's screen printed though and there will be a plain border around the entire yardage. I wish I could draw a picture. Picture a 3 yard length. There will be a plain border around the entire piece (selvedge edges and cut edges) so plan to buy a bit more than you think you need.

Love them! I wish I could afford to buy as much as I want of every print I like!

My daughter wanted to make a mattress cover for her organic sofa. She is an artist and designed a 3 color print of woodpeckers and trees. She went back and forth a few times, all online perfecting the color. The sample yard of fabric was just perfect. She was really happy that they used organic cotton and her wood and latex couch is a one of a kind creation. This is a really innovative company and fills a need for green living resources.

You are right to be wary, especially if you attempt to design your own fabric. A few years ago, I tried to design a fabric via Spoonflower based on a beautiful photograph of a butterfly I had taken. I ordered a small sample of my creation, and it was awful -- a cartoon like mess with garish colors and the repeating image oddly placed.

Spoonflower permits graphic fabric designers (anyone really) to upload designs and scale them to produce unique creations. I didn't feel capable of this so after browsing their collection I contacted one of their artists with what I had in mind and ordered their swatch collection so I could select fabrics. The artist sent me an email link to her designs on Spoonflower. It took perhaps 2 weeks as she uploaded and waited to see samples. The wait was a small price to pay- she kept me informed by email of the scale changes and in the end she added a few other color options I had not considered.
I was estatic with the results- vibrant colors, lovely hand, it was perfect.
I had considered trying to upload an image myself but my experience taught me that there is a lot of background knowedge that goes into creating designs on fabric design.

I have ordered from Spoonflower but never designed my own. The fabric I received was beautiful and just what I wanted. I do agree with the advice that the designs are screen printed and there is a white border, so just add that into your yardage needs calculation.

I love the concept and knowing there is a place for talented designers to print their own fabrics.

I've ordered quite a bit from them. Their quilting cottons and silk crepe are nice, but I can't recommend the jersey - I had several fat quarters of jersey in one order (underwear making!) and the colours were REALLY off on a few, and all of them faded badly in the first wash and were quite stretched out (no Lycra so poor recovery).

That, and their international shipping is RIDICULOUSLY SLOW. Way, way over the usual time, like 6+ weeks after I get the shipping notification email, and that's not just a one-off, it happens consistently. For those reasons, I hesitate to order again unless I reeeeeeally like the print.

Actually the fabrics are not screenprinted--they are done on huge inkjet printers. i visited the business (which is located between Durham and Raleigh NC) and was very, very impressed. The quality of the fabric is superb and the colors were vibrant. The CEO rides a recumbent bicycle to work, the staff is friendly, etc. A great business run by creative thinkers.

Ditto on the international postage. I was happy with the quality of the fabric and the colour (I had a half yard of their basic cotton offering in a design made by a friend of mine). However, it took FOREVER to get to the UK -- I think close to 7 weeks -- and postage was stupidly expensive to begin with. It made the whole exercise way too expensive and annoying for me to repeat.

One woman. One sewing machine. One giant stack of fabric. What could possibly go wrong?
