I have an android phone. I downloaded a free app - endomondo. It tracks time, distance, speed, location and calories burned. It also utilizes my phone's GPS. I bought a heart rate monitor strap and I also keep track of my heart rate. I keep track of splits and find it interesting to compare performance over time during each bike ride.
While I would have loved a new heart rate monitor, this was a more cost effective solution for me. I got a handlebar holder for my phone to keep my phone handy.
