Date: 2/16/13 9:04 AM Ok so maybe I am blurring the line between quilting and sewing BUT I have the front of the binding on this enormous quilt, pinned the back and sometimes, when I SID the front, it misses catching the back -- Sew I was thinking -- Why couldn't you use a Zipper foot? It is made for getting really close and maybe I wouldn't miss parts of the back binding?
Any thoughts from you great Quilters?

Date: 2/16/13 9:18 AM You can give it a try. I always use a walking foot so the layers feed evenly, but the Quilt Police won't come to your house if you use a zipper foot. Rules are broken every day in the quilt world. Let us know how it goes. |

Date: 2/16/13 10:49 AM I use the walking foot too, as this really gives you control and it feeds nicely. EDITED to add that I am not a great quilter, and that is why I need to use that walking foot! Date: 2/16/13 11:39 AM It is not unusual for the top stitching to miss the back of the binding on a quilt. That is probably why many hand sew this portion of the quilting process.
I don't think a zipper foot has enough surface to do this technique.
You may want to try a blind hem foot that has an adjustable "rudder" that could be positioned to hug the edge binding.
What about a machine blanket or buttonhole stitch? Or, a zig-zag stitch?

Date: 2/16/13 11:48 AM The secret is to make the binding fold about 1/4" more on the back than on the front- that way you don't miss it. I don't see why a zipper foot wouldn't work so long as the quilt was well supported. ------ Sewing: A creative mess is better than tidy idleness. ~Author Unknown

Date: 2/16/13 12:30 PM That is why I sew my binding onto the back, flip to front and use SID foot with needle moved to the right 1.5 with dual feed on front; that way if it misses on back it is less noticable.

Date: 2/16/13 12:31 PM Or try an edge stitch foot, which also has the "rudder". You will have to change your needle position. ------ MartiP |

I have used this brand of glue and the method is much easier than using a thousand pins to hold the binding in place for stitching. ------ “I don’t give them Hell, I just tell the truth about them and they think it’s Hell.” — Harry Truman |

Date: 2/16/13 1:31 PM I must do my bindings completely differently because I'm not understanding any of this.
Do you sew your bindings on the back side by machine before folding them over to the front? ------ blog: goodworks1.wordpress.com
