Need tips: machine sewing sequin trim. Doesn't the needle strike some of the sequins?

But doesn't the needle strike (and penetrate or break) some of the sequins? I wanna make a black detachable sequined shirt collar! You think the best way to do this is sewing on individual sequins by hand? j.

I just checked the Janome site and they do. Janome sells a beading foot and a ribbon/sequin foot. I would probably hand sew it on though as I would also worry about breaking a needle. I know there are quite a few people on here who make costumes and dance outfits. Maybe someone with more experience will have some advice. HTH

I have a couple sequin fabrics on hand for tops but I am planning to remove the sequins in the seam allowances. Is that an option for you?

They sewed through the sequin. Our uniforms are seen from a very far distance so no one can see the sloppy sewing. Since your detachable collar will be looked at much closer it probably won't work. Being lazy I would try a thin line liquid stitch to attach to the thread behind the sequins. Maybe start around the outer edges and work your way in. Obviously this is not what the professionals do. Attempt at your own risk.

Yes, there is: Spandex House Have fun! I agree with this! I made many many MANY costumes with sequined fabric. Some stretchy and some not. Yes the needle with go through some of them, some sequins will break. Take your time when you sew and you will probably be more comfortable wearing the collar of you remove the sequins on the edges. ------ Cathryn

If you sew with the nap they will feed easier with less breakage. Since the collar is detachable, you might consider one of Aleenes craft glues. I've had success with that brand, when doing unusual costumes. ------ My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

Remember to sew with the nap, and do not put sequins right on the edge, I would be tempted to do some type of piping to finish the edge neatly, andsmoothly. Personally I would use sequin yardgoods if at all possible. I know that I have some in my costume fabric boxes. Have Fun Pam
