 1 member likes this. I was in a place called Bare Boards yesterday, hoping to find something nice to work as a cutting table.
While there I was looking at the desks. All of them were really heavy and made of wood.
Many had a slide out shelf for a computer keyboard.
What if one was to cut a U or a hole, in the table top like the Koala, and Horns have and in the table top so sit a sewing machine in and rest it on the keyboard shelf. The shelf would have to be stabilized so it no longer moved. You could use the extension table that comes with the machine to form a flatbed.
Any ideas? What I like about this is the desks are heavy wood and have draws. They are wider then 24 inches. And the cost is under 1000.

Date: 2/17/13 1:27 PM The only problem would be if it is low enough. I am short so finding a table or desk low enough for me was a problem. My son ended up building me a sewing machine table. Nothing fancy but it works really well and fits me.
Look at the posts on "Sewing Spaces". I saw some example of desks that were made into sewing machine tables. ------

Date: 2/17/13 2:39 PM The keyboard shelf would have to be just the right drop to give you the level surface on top.
I just got a cabinet for not much more than $1,000 for example. It's got the custom insert, pop-up leafs on the back, front and side, a drawer, and another 3 drawers in a separate slide-out cabinet.
Weighing the work/money you'll need to put into the desk conversion against buying a ready-made sewing cabinet, would you come out ahead? I guess that would be the deciding factor. |

Date: 2/18/13 10:04 AM Ikea's Galant line of desks are really tables, with adjustable legs. They come in many sizes and shapes. You can even buy one size now and add an extension later, without having to buy a whole new desk. This means if you move or change your mind, you haven't lost a lot of money. I bought the Alex rolling drawers to put underneath, and I'm very happy with it. However, if you keep the drawers underneath, you will be limited in how low you can set your table. |

Date: 2/18/13 10:50 AM I can't remember the brand or company, but my mom bought a very sturdy computer table with a dropped keyboard platform that is just the right size for my Quest Plus, which lives at her place. I think most sewing machines could be made to create an even surface, either by raising the machine up on foam or cork mats (being careful to avoid anything that when heated will release toxins, as discussed in a recent thread) or by using an acrylic surround.
It's a stationary platform, bolted in place, not a drawer-like tray.
Wish I had the name or link, both lost in my phone/laptop update debacle. ------

3 members like this. I use a 48" wide computer desk, with hutch over it as my sewing table. I have puck lights installed on the bottom of the hutch to provide extra light when needed, and use the key board tray for notions. I anchored plastic drawer organizer trays to the pull out tray to store my frequently used items .... thread, bobbins, tape measures, rippers, seam gauge, hand sewing supplies, machine needles, chalk markers etc......it is really handy.
I have space on top of the desk for my sewing machine and serger - when I use one I can easily push the other back and out of the way. I have Bernina sewing machines with the extension table that can be attached - most of the time I sew without the extension, but it is handy in the lower cabinet and can be attached in a flash. The lower cabinet, designed to hold the computer, is perfect for storing one of my alternate machines.
I considered the sewing specific tables and cabinets, but decided on the computer desk since it is flexible and much less expensive than the cabinets designed for sewing equipment. I have a dedicated sewing space, so there is no need to close everything up and make the machines disappear. I just pop a machine cover over my machines, turn out the light over the table and call it day.

Date: 2/18/13 2:34 PM I was looking at cubicles on the Internet today. Used ones going for less than $400. You get free standing walls to pin up things on, overhead bookshelf, storage bin, cart w/ drawers on castors and table top that can be adjusted in height. Seems like it would work as a sensible sewing center. ------

Date: 2/18/13 3:36 PM I am using an L shaped computer desk. Solid wood. This works for me. DH took out the drawer under the 830 so I would have more knee room. Cost $140.00 Craigslist.

Quilting is relaxing to me. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors.
