Crochet a Coral Reef! A possible PR community project

I recently watched a TEDTalks presentation about a worldwide community project where people are creating these coral reef displays using hyperbolic crochet. There are hundreds of chapters around the world, and it benefits education and the arts. I wondered if anyone here would be interested in starting a PR by mail chapter? I've started working on a piece, and the patterns for these are amazingly simple yet beautiful. Even a complete crochet beginner could participate. I will post pictures of pieces as I finish them. For now, I'm just making a little home display, but if enough people are interested, perhaps we could make a full scale display and donate it to a college or even a High School (or anything, if someone can think of a better place to donate a learning display). Most of the pleasure is in getting that last little piece perfect...Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just keep showing up and doing the work. Date: 2/18/13 1:04 AM JEF, the official webpage gives 4 basic patterns with some suggested different increase variations, and basic instructions in general. I just finished doing the first type, a simple 20 chain, then crochet 3, increase 1, repeat.....for as long as yo want. It makes an amazing shape, and it is so easy to do! It just takes time. Since I have been under the weather and so has DD, I just worked on this while watching Disney/Pixar movies with her all day. It's pretty good sized, about a foot long and 8 inches tall? This is the same one from 2 angles. It isn't as good as some I've seen, but I feel good about it for a first try. PDF with basic coral shapes/patterns. tlmck3, how cool! I'm not sure if they moved or if they folded. Yarn shops come and go here so quickly. I never made it to see the whole thing--which is stupid, since it was downtown in the Cultural Center and relatively easy to get to. I hope they moved it, so it can still be seen somewhere. JEF, glad I could get the link for you. :) Annie- oh, wonderful! How do you think we should go about it? I'm thinking, to start, we should just make some on our own, post the pics of our developing tiny reefs in this thread. Since your daughter is connected to the Nature Conservancy, do you think they might like to take the finished display (months from now when we have one? :) I live fairly near the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and also Portland State, which has a large marine biology department. However, I'm not sure how to approach them, and the Nature Conservancy sounds interesting.
