I'm going to make my first purse with several zipped pockets. I would really like to make some ribbon or fabric pulls for the zippers. Preferably ones that are sewn so they don't come off easily. I did my usual search and got very few results. So off to the boards for help. Any suggestions for the materials? And how and when to sew them together-before or after I sew them in the purse. Help of any kind is much appreciated.

Thanks for the links, unfortunately they won't work. I'm look to make the pulls out of ribbon, with no other embellishments on them. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe this is too obvious, but I'd just tie (loop?) them on like usual and then tack them at the ends with the sewing machine if you want to secure them.

I've seen ones with UltraSuede (or similar, non-raveling 'fabric') that were just looped on (fold in half, stick the fold through the hole in the zipper pull, then pull the loose ends thru the loop/fold.

Or I have a Columbia fleece jacket on right now that has a grosgrain ribbon just threaded through the (fairly large) hole and bar tacked across the ribbon by machine about 1/4" from the metal zipper pull.

By feel I'd say the ribbon is polyester or nylon and was heat-melted on the ends to keep it from raveling.

Obvious answers and no insult and much appreciated. I see pulls on clothing, like my jackets. And they seem to be pull through the zipper opening and stitched right below the pull and then stitched near the bottom. I picked up some grosgrain ribbon to try the pulls. But I was never sure of some things, do you sew the ribbon pulls before you put the bag together? Which does seem the easier way. And do they need to be fabric glued together? Not so sure of this one. I was thinking of fray checking the ends, but I didn't know if that would be enough. I think that doing these pretty obvious for most folks, but I've never done them before and I tend to mess up the obviousThe suggestions are very helpful!

Fold the robbon in half. Take the folded end and slip it through the zipper pull about 1/2 inch. Now tale the loose ends and put them through the loop of fabric. Pull the loose ends tight and that will secure the ribbon into the hole of the pull. You can reinforce with stitching or another knot. Is this the information you need?

You can also get bags of narrow leather strips in colors (like Hobby Lobby) for this idea seen on purses and luggage. Vera Bradley just loops their logo ribbon thru the zippers.

I think you'll just want to test a bunch of different things and see what works.

The raw ends of the ribbon on my jacket were melted (near a candle flame) or with a heat tool of some sort.

If you are going to sew them, then yes, I think it would be a lot easier to maneuver close to the pull if you do that before inserting the zippers.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions. I think I'm going to just have to try several of the suggestions I've gotten on the board and see what works best. Some of the ideas we're ones I've thought of before. Yes, I think I'm going to sew the pulls beforehand. But some of the other ideas look interesting too and don't require sewing. I have a whole bunch of extra zippers and I'm going to use one to make a zipper pull a couple of different ways. Best way and look wins Thanks for all the help I've gotten.
