So, accidentally threw it into reverse too quickly before my 7 year old daughter had stopped hand cranking, and I think I must have done something to the machine because the backstitch is looking wonky...just sort of a mess.

Any thoughts on what I might have done? Is it an easy home fix or a hospital case?

I have a 1920's Singer hand crank 99. I don't think I could hurt or change anything by going forwards and reverse at all, even if I was sewing pretty fast and just kept moving the lever back and forth while sewing along. But since it takes one hand to hand crank, and another to move a lever at the same time, then I would have no hands left to guide my fabric right then. So I don't think you could have "done" anything bad to it that way at all. I do think maybe stitching looks wonky for some other reason though, like if you sewed a bit off the fabric, maybe you got some thread knots and tangles now, or maybe some thread stuck in the machine or something like that instead. Maybe unthread the whole machine top and bottom, looking for stuck threads in there, and put a new needle in, and re-thread and just start out all over again and see what happens.

It's a pretty strong machine, if my 4 year old could not break it or foul it up, and I did let her sew even all by herself, with me just standing there only, your 7 year old probably can't either. Kids like to twirl anything that moves, maybe she "twirled" your top tension knob around to some other #? if so, just put it back in the middle maybe.

Check that the bobbin case is still properly seated. If it was a sudden jerk or slam into reverse, it could have jostled loose. Unlikely, but possible.

Yeah
I'm going to go with...'something minor somewhere got jostled out of position'
check all the bits and rethread.
You can switch directions on that machine on the fly without any problem.

This one, that one, and a bunch of other ones!
(though the herd is getting more streamlined)
