Anybody have comments on the above machine (Good, Bad, Indifferent) and/or comments on the Viking line of machines as far as reliability in general. Spent several hours recently playing with Ruby at dealer and was impressed but a few hours doesn't tell me much for long term reliability. I would prefer Bernina but ($$$$$$) is beyond me fight now.

I can't comment on the Ruby, but I have a Viking 1+ and love it. To find out what members think about the Viking Ruby, check out the Sewing Machine reviews. Go to the Home Page. On the left of the two center columns under the Sewing Machine heading, click on More Sewing Machines. On the Sewing Machine & Serger Review page, type "Viking" into the Search box. Scroll down the list to find the reviews that pertain to the Ruby and click on READ REVIEW. There are a total of four reviews on the first three pages. Good luck with your decision to buy.

I have a Viking 1+ and absolutly love it.

I can't comment on the Ruby but I have had excellent experience with older Vikings. I have a 6460 from 1977, a #1 from 1994 and a Designer SE from 2005. I use the SE. The #1 is backup and the 6460 is currently frozen from non-use but I'm emotionally attached to it. All three machines have been trouble free and very easy to use. The latter is subjective, of course. Each time I looked for a new machine I tried everything--all the major brands--and always wound up with the Viking. The first time I sat down to sew on my first Viking (and the subsequent ones) I felt comfortable immediately. Do you feel that way about the Ruby? I don't know about current Vikings. There have been a lot of stories floating around--both good and bad. As Judy suggested, check the reviews and sew on the machine as much as possible.

I had the Ruby (the original without the deluxe stitch system) for a year before I traded up to the Diamond DeLuxe. The Ruby was great, no problems with it and I did a lot with it in that year. My only gripe with it was the smaller screen. There is a lot of information and icons they seem to squeeze on it for it's size. But it was manageable.

I have a great Viking dealer, otherwise I probably wouldn't own these expensive machines without one. That would be one of my first considerations, are they going to back me if something goes wrong with the machine?

If you have your heart set on a Bernina, do you have a dealer near you that has previously owned machines? They may have a lightly used model that would fit your needs for a comparable price to the Ruby.

I'm still loving my Ruby (my review is in there somewhere.) I haven't done much embroidery with it lately, but it does everything I could ever need sewing-wise.

Everybody says to pick a dealer that you have a good relationship with, but I haven't been back to my dealer more than a couple of times to buy an accessory or two. Maybe I'm more of the independent type? I haven't even had my Ruby serviced, since I don't want to be without it for the month+ wait time. But then I haven't had any issues with it either.
