I'm wondering if Burda has a misses fitting shell available, or at least a complete set of measurements associated with each size.

I'm Looking specifically for across front, and across back.

I love sewing with Burda so I went looking ....Threads Magazine forum discussing Burda fit

It was a good read and I didn't know about measuring one's neck!

I looked in my copy of Haggar (2004) and found the following values

Bust Waist Hips Back Chest
80,60,86,34,31.5
84,64,90,35,32.5
88,68,94,36,33.5
92,72,98,37,34.5
96,76,102,38,35.5
100,80,106,39,36.5

Which seem to correspond, more or less, to Burda 34--44. Will have to go up a size, then.

Burda has charts (in pdf format) for women, men, and kids on their website (in inches and in centimeters): burda charts.

A decade or two ago, they had a couple. One was a 1980s broad-shoulder monster, but the other, 3750 , was a jewel. Right now, there does not seem to be even one image of it on the internet, but if you set up a search on ebay, eventually it will turn up.

I draft a lot of my own patterns-- back width and front width are crucial to getting a good fit around the armscye. I'm not used to burda patterns, and I'm trying to get my bearings. Unfortunately, neither are listed on the burda measurement charts. As both are very difficult to measure properly, I'm not that surprised.

I own that one (3750.) Watch for it at thrift stores. That is where I got mine, in factory folds. It's nice because it has many sizes, whereas most of the other ones, have one size.

Yes, the neck measurement is a great place to start. Thanks so much for posting this link -- I LOVE woodruff's explanation. It's sort of what I've been trying to do, but this really explains it clearly:

Quote:
the key to using Burda is NOT to choose a "size." Burdas have a size chart in the pattern somewhere, often on the pattern sheet itself, sometimes on the instruction sheet. What Burda wants you to do, rather than choosing a "size," is measure the body at the areas marked on the chart (including the neck, which no other pattern company concerns itself with). Then, you look at the chart and circle the size number that is closest in these areas. The chances are that you will be several different sizes, one for the bust, another for the waist, and so on.

When you trace your pattern, what you will be doing is gradually moving from one size line to another, which will give you a fairly customized pattern that corresponds to the body you're sewing for.

By the way, it's OK to trace between the size lines!

Great minds think alike! lol

I have just purchased fitting shells from Vogue, Butterick, and McCalls, and was wondering if Burda had one available.
