Date: 2/24/13 4:40 PM When I bought my first serger I bought 4 spools of every color thread I knew I'd use.....and did use it. But after 20+ yrs. I still have some of that same thread left. Colors I thought I'd use more often that I did didn't get used much at all. The cones are falling apart, but the thread itsself appears to still be good. It doesn't break when I put on it (to test it) and run thru the machine great.
My question is: should I get rid of it due to the cone falling apart? Is this thread too old to use/keep? At the time it was a Joann's special $1.00 so I'm not out of a ton of money here. And it wouldn't matter anyway. Thank you all...... ------

 1 member likes this. I would buy new and improved serger threads in neutral colors.
You can always use sewing thread in the color matching the garment for the left needle, or not. |

I bought cones in black & white and now if I want to match colors, I buy regular sewing thread in medium size spools (always try to get it on sale). It works great and I know the thread is strong and won't get old. |

3 members like this. I would hate to toss out thread that doesn't break and still sews well in the machine. If it is useable and works I can't see adding it to our landfills and then having to spend more money to repurchase.

Date: 2/25/13 8:20 PM If it's still good, I guess you could put an empty spool of thread or anything kind of like one, on something like a electric screw driver bit with some masking tape on it, and try to make it feed off onto there, instead. It would not be crosswound, just going around and around instead. I can't imagine just serger cones falling apart from age though, as all the little ones I have seen ever were made of plastic, are yours really old ones made of a cardboard tube or such instead? I have some rayon threads from maybe the 1950's or way before, on some long skinny cardboard cops, and thread is amazingly still O.K. but the cardboard never fell apart either.
If it was just cheapie polyester Joann's serger thread, I think I would just dump it, but if for some reason it was real thin nice 100% cotton serger thread instead, then I might keep it and use it for something that takes up a ton of thread, and would be kind of expensive now when it does that instead. Like maybe for free standing cotton lace embroidery even.

Date: 2/26/13 7:46 PM I was surprised when the plastic started breaking too! Something I never expected to happen. I'd say it's about 20 yrs. old. Once the top started breaking all the thread just messed up big time, so some of it I did just toss. Some like I said I put onto bobbins. Only thing I can think is the plastic just got brittle...... ------
