Date: 2/28/13 10:14 AM Hi everyone, I am new to this site, but have reading the boards and found some helpful tips regarding different sewing machines. I wanted to see if anyone has any advice for me.
I started sewing in October; at the time I just bought a cheap machine with good reviews to make sure I liked sewing before I invested money in a good machine. The one I have now is the Brother 2600i. Now that this has become a full blown hobby (I love sewing!) I figure it's time to upgrade to a better machine. I went to Joann fabrics a few weeks ago and the sales woman showed me the Viking Opal; I have read all the good reviews, tried it out, and I think this may be the machine for me, but I guess I am a little hesitant because although the price is way more then what I paid for my Brother, is seems so reasonable for what is made out to be an awesome product.
Can anyone share personal experience with the Opal? I understand there are two versions but the differences just seem to be number of stitches?
Anyways, any help is appreciated; I am not too sure what features are most important to me since my current machine doesn't have that many; but if it matters I use my machine to quilt, sew bags, I plan to try basics clothes soon; just a little bit of everything. |

Date: 2/28/13 2:18 PM I've had the 670 since November and I love it. I know one of the differences is the auto thread cutter. I've done several quilts with it and I've been amazed at the numbers of layers of fabric it walks over without a hitch. I don't use the stitch advisor as much as I thought I might. It's very well lit. It has a larger harp space than standard sewing machines. The needle threader is easy to use and actually works. The bobbin sensor is very nice too. I love being able to wind a bobbin from the needle! Every machine should do this. -- Edited on 2/28/13 2:19 PM -- ------ Viking Opal 670

Date: 2/28/13 4:24 PM Congratulations!! I forgot to tell you I also love the start/stop button, the speed control and oh those decorative stitches - LOL. I didn't think I would ever use the speed control, becase I love fast, but I sure did slow the machine down a couple of notches for some applique I was doing. I must have a lead foot or something. The ability to slow the machine down really came in handy. ------ Viking Opal 670

Date: 2/28/13 5:00 PM I bought the 650 last month upgrading from a Brother PC420 and LOVE my new machine. I am piecing a quilt on it right now. I couldn't do that on my Brother because it pulled so badly. The Viking feeds straight as an arrow and is so nice to use and so much quieter than the Brother.

Date: 3/1/13 12:16 PM Congratulations! I thinks the Opals are so fun to look at! And they have a great set of features, too. Did you buy at a dealer or a Joann store? I was in Joann yesterday and was so tempted to buy one! -- Edited on 3/1/13 12:34 PM -- |
