Date: 3/2/13 7:25 PM I sew for my daughter With a D cup and since i've head that misses patterns are designed for a B cup I do a FBA on a Misses 18 that allows for more room and better fit. i have a Women's 18W Butterick pattern I want to use but don't know if the Plus Size patterns are designed for a B cup and needs a FBA to accommodate a D cup fit or is there already enough room in the 18W size pattern? thanks. |

Date: 3/2/13 9:21 PM I'm not 100% sure, so hopefully a few others will chime in, but what I've put together is that plus sizes are usually a C cup. At least that seems to be the starting point for a FBA from Barbara Deckert in Plus-size pattern fitting and the Singer Perfect Plus book.

Date: 3/3/13 7:54 PM Thanks for the quick responses. i've had trouble in the past with just the finished measurements because then the finished garmet is too big everywhere else. I'm taking the jacket muslin class and i've discovered that there is a lot of extra room above the bust when I use the FBA's to get to a D cup from the B of the misses pattern. I'm going with the one cup size adjustment from C to D with the Plus size pattern. I'll try to remember to let you know how it turns out. |

Date: 3/28/13 4:29 PM I am taking Barbara's class on Craftsy; I really like it a LOT. She says that if you are C or smaller, go by your bust measurement; but if you're a D or larger, measure your chest *above* your bust and buy the pattern size that corresponds to that measurement and then do a FBA. This is so that the shoulder and neck area fit properly. By that method I start with a size 18 even though my hips need a size 24. I have to add everywhere, but it's far easier to add to the side seams than redo the neck and shoulders. |
