I've got a new machine, does this look right?

I just bought a Singer Superb. I was able to get a great deal on it, since it was a floor model. It means I'm missing a few things, like a foot pedal and the extension table but the price was right.

So I started making my daughter a pair of pants and I want to overstitch the seams. I have the correct foot and I used the right stitch and this is how it turned out.

This seems wrong. shouldn't it look a lot neater? Is this a tension problem?

Thanks

You are right, it is a tension problem. First check threading and make sure your thread is inside the tension plates. Sometimes the thread will pop out or maybe didn't get "seated" all the way when you threaded.

If all that checks out then you will need to tighten the tension to see if that helps. Tip: have a pen and notepad handy so you can make notes of what you changed and how much of a turn you did so you can put it back if needed.

Congrats on the new machine and how exciting!

Thanks. I messed with the tension a bit and took another look at the manual. I messed with the width adjustment some and eventually got a pretty good stitch. Not to tight and not too loose.

I do have to wonder why the machine isn't set to the default width of the foot. which I think is about 1/4" or maybe 3/8".
