I read somewhere that cotton or polyester threads are not the best option.

Date: 3/6/13 5:27 PM I use a ton of linen--mostly mid-weight, but also heavier, cotton blends, and canvas, and even hankyweight--and use regular ol' C&C Dual Duty. It's what my machines like, and it's always worked well for me. My linen clothes are worn and worked hard and have to stand up to wear and tear and washing. (That is a linen damask corset in my avatar, in case you're wondering about a particular thread being strong enough!  )
I'd say stick to what gives you the best results overall.

Date: 3/6/13 10:53 PM Since polyester and cotton are the two most common threads available you'd be out of luck if you couldn't use either. High quality polyester like Guttermans or Mettler work just fine. Linen is generally an easy fabric to work with. ------
