Serger help Differences between 5 thread cover lock and 4 thread servers

I love it but have been thinking of replacing it with a 5 thread cover lock. My only issue; I am unsure of the differences, ie: pros and cons. I usually use my sewing machine to do the straight stitch next to the serged edge, but that takes extra time, making sure both machines have same thread ect. Am I going to be wasting my money buying a new cover lock serger when mine still works fine? On the fence about this so any feedback or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. This is my first post here so I hope I'm in the right spot with it.

Date: 3/6/13 2:27 PM I use my 5 thread when I am sure that what I am sewing fits me. Then it is a speedy job Straight chain stitch and 3 thread overlock in one swoop. Date: 3/6/13 8:26 PM Yes, I think you would love the 5 thread serger because of the coverstitch alone. So great for hems especially on knits. More versatile than 4 thread.

What have I been waiting for all these years! So...I just got a 5 thread...Juki MO-735 and she is FANTASTIC! I really enjoy having both options...easy to thread and purrs every time! I am happy to have the cs option and the o/l is amazing! For now, the combo is perfect as I do not use cs much...if ever i intend to cs more, then I will purchase a cs machine. Hope this helps...

If you buy a combo machine, then you'll have to switch back and forth between overlock and CS and then back again each time you need to use its' CS option. You could keep your White Huskylock serger and still increase your options by buying a stand-alone CS. If you have the room for another machine and you sew a lot of knits and/or do a lot of temporary seaming for fitting, you might consider a machine made just for CSing. There are several models on the market (i.e. Janome, Babylock, Bernina, etc.). I personally bought a combo machine and not long after that, I bought a stand-alone Janome Cover Pro 1000CP so I wouldn't have to fiddle with switching back and forth. I made my decision to do this based on information I found right on this website. Of course, it all depends upon the amount of space in your sewing area, your budget, and how much you feel you'll use the CS/chainstitching options on your new machine, be it combo or stand-alone. My old White serger was over 10 years old and I wasn't sure how much life was left in it. I ended up keeping the White and using the Singer mainly as a Cover stitch machine. I recently added a Janome 900CP to my sewing room. I can set up my machines for rollhem, 5 thread and cover stitch and move between machines. It also depends on the attachements available for the different machines. Best advice is to test drive both combo and stand alone machines and see what works best for you. Trade in value won't be much for the old machine and sometimes it's nice to have 1 threaded with light colors and 1 with dark. ------ Janome10001, Babylock ESG3, Brother ULT 2001, White 634D serger, Pfaff 1472, Singer featherweight, Singer 14T957Dc, Bernina FunLock 009DCC coverlock, Brother PQ1500S, Janome CP900.
