Date: 3/9/13 3:44 PM Grrr... I am so disappointed! I worked yesterday evening and most of the day today on the table runner. I wanted to finish the top but there is an error in the instructions for cutting the fabric. A more experienced quilter would have seen this right away. Of course, I cut, marked, stitched and pressed everything before I realized the squares are not the same size. 
I cannot complete without more fabric.

Date: 3/9/13 4:25 PM Oh that is such a bummer! Have you contacted Connecting Threads about the problem. They should send you more fabric or a refund or both! They also should be made aware so that others do not fall victim. I would not be so hard on yourself... it is easy to assume that the pattern is correct.

 4 members like this. Not unusual for a quilt pattern to contain at least one error. This happened to me just once and from there on, I cut and constructed just one block before continuing.
Perhaps you could add a strip to the smaller blocks, or redo the larger block to match the smaller ones and add a border around all three.
I also would not hesitate to call the error and the fact it ruined your project to the attention of whomever offered this kit for purchase.
A quilt can almost always be rescued!

Date: 3/9/13 4:51 PM I have sent an email to Connecting Threads and also to the author of the pattern (who wrote it for CT). I am frustrated because I have time to sew this weekend and don't want to take out another project in the middle of this one. Very frustrating.
And, this is not the only error in the pattern. I have found two (so far). :( |

Date: 3/9/13 6:15 PM Oh I am sorry to read this. I just wanted to note that when I had an issue with something Connecting Threads got on it right away.
I had ordered 2 yards of fabric & was sent a 10 inch square instead. They expressed the correct amount to me right away & very nice on the phone too.
I hope they will fix this ASAP too. ........
Could you add small strips around the smaller squares to make up the difference or square up to size the larger square & cut it down to the size of the smaller one? I would hate to waste the fabric.

Date: 3/9/13 6:31 PM I thought about squaring up the larger squares but I don't want to end up with something wonky that won't match up.
The pattern creates 3 12" blocks by using 4 rows of 4 squares each.
I will wait to hear from CT on Monday. It is just frustrating that I have time now and may not have time next weekend.
In the mean time, I am working on binding my first quilt that has been a UFO for several months.  |

Date: 3/10/13 1:51 PM It looks like the outer two blocks in your picture are the same size and the inner one, the half square triangle block, is bigger? If so you can trim the HST down to be the same as the others - some quilters do this intentionally to get the HST really accurate. 4 x 4 blocks in 12x 12 inches (12-1/2 inches unfinished) should be 3-1/2 inch blocks unfinished. Are the smaller blocks 3-1/2 inches?
tutorial on HST, trimming to size at about the 1:00 mark.
Before you cut anything, though, maybe you should show us the whole project and we can help you figure out if you can recover with what you have so far. ------

Date: 4/7/13 2:29 PM The error was mine (again). The instructions later on say to trim the block down to size.
I did finish the runner and it turned out great! I was quite proud of it as it was only my second quilting project ever. However, I mailed it out without taking a picture.
My daughter drew a design for me for the quilting. Since I have no experience with the quilting part, I copied it onto tracing paper and used temporary adhesive spray to attach to the runner. Then I stitched with my walking foot. I know this is not conventional but it worked out beatifully for this project.
My friend received it in the mail and was very happy with it. |
