Bernina Artista 180 - won't backstitch

This machine is a beauty and I got her from sweet little sewing lady here locally. I don't think anything could have been broken on this machine... all cared for, tuned up and barely used. It is a beauty of a machine!! Here is the question - I can't get it to backstitch? HOld down the reverse and nothing. I don't know why? I was just curious if there was a function, default, quirk that I just didn't know about to check? When I try and just hand wind it backwards, it just feels very tight?
