Hello,

Im looking to make Vogue V1344 but I need some fabric help. Fabric suggestions are Crepe de Chine, charmeuse and voile for main fabric, and chiffon and China Silk for lining. Could I make this with rayon challis? If so, since my challis is thicker/heavier than the suggested fabrics, could I skip lining then?

Thanks!

As long as your rayon challis is soft and drapey, it would work for that dress.

Yes, you could make the dress without a lining. The thing is that you would need to look at the instruction sheet and pattern pieces to know whether or not the lining provided the means of finishing the neck and armhole edges. If it does, then you have to plan an alternative method of finishing which shouldn't be too difficult, but must be done somehow.

Since your rayon challis is thicker and heavier I don't think that it's a good choice. There are a lot of gathers and a layered front that may be too thick in your fabric. Voile is a the best choice in this grouping for a beginner. A cotton voile would not be slippery so easier to cut and sew. You would need to line it and I'd chose a silk crepe de chine since it's easier to cut and sew than either silk chiffon or China Silk, also known as habotai. Cotton lawn would also be a good choice for fabric. Read the instructions first and see, as someone else said, to see if that's how the neck and armscyes are finished.

Oh, my: you could rock that dress all summer. A little wrap takes you right into evening.

I noticed it said Chiffon AND China Silk. The suggested fabrics have commas. So the facings or arm edges may be the chiffon.Chiffon is not usually used as a lining,so I think the china silk would be the lining. Also cotton voile is not slippery like charmeuse,it has a crisp but semi sheer feel and look and although, sort of floaty its not drapey like crepe de chine. But I think even though the challis is heavier ,than any of the suggestions it would drape well in this looser style. The voile would have to be lined with something opaque[not china silk] or what point would there be to liniing? The rayon challis could be lined for comfort with maybe rayon lining fabric or you could wear a slip.

So I made it this weekend. It is hanging on my dressform and I will hem it tomorrow. I posted it on the PR review Picture after hemming!

Eleanor thank you so much for the reminder about the finishing. I did not think about that part at all. Eliminating the lining also eliminated the facing, so I put in clear elastic along the neckline. That was the part that needed separate finishing...everything else is okay.

Nancy - rayon challis is thicker than the suggested fabric but I don't think voile will drape as closely to silk as rayon, so I went with my original fabric choice. The finished dress has some heft to it...
