Retired Janome - Coverpro 900CP or CPX - known defect question. Dealer said the Coverpro 900 was discontinued because it was a bad machine

A wealth of knowledgeable sewers! Thank you all. I am INTERESTED IN THE JANOME COVERPRO 900CPX MODEL (not the 900CP). I am also new to serging. I want a serger and also a dedicated cover stitch. Does anyone have information about "known problems" with either the Coverpro 900CP or the 900CPX and I should avoid purchasing? If so, are the 1000CP and CPX models better quality or just new model #? If you know what I mean. I found a reasonably priced Janome Coverpro900CPX on line for $399.99 through several sources. I called my local Janome Dealer, who originally showed me the current, more pricey$$$$model. I asked if they could get the older model. She quickly said there known tension problems with the Coverpro900, it was discontinued, plus only 1 stitch width and I should not get and tried to sell me the $800.00 model. So I want to verify her information before going ahead with purchasing. The 900CP Model only has 1 stitch width. The CPX has the TST tension and 2 stitch widths (I think). The Janome website offered good information on their Retired Machines. Thanks everyone!

It. like the newer one has 2 stitch widths and can use 1, 2 or 3 needles. I paid under $500 for the machine. I love it as do many others. I was quoted a wide range of prices. I ended up buying from a dealer about an hour from my home and did all of it on the phone. He sent it to me. I was wary of not having classes but it's very easy to use. It's not available online but I called around and he was willing to ship it to me. I'd call around for prices but stay instate I think that they can't sell to you from out of state but I may be wrong on that. ------ www.nancyksews.blogspot.com

You can look for reviews for each of these machines under sewing machine and serger reviews. The link is in the darker colored bar at the left side of your screen. There are also 5 threads for the CoverPro machines pinned at the top of the Sergers, Coverstitch, and Blind Hemmers board. The main discussion has >430 pages, so I suggest that you look at the 4 basics threads first. Most of that info is based on the original CP models, not the CPX models. I believe the 900CP and 1000CP models were replaced by the CPX models when they added an extra tension adjustment for the looper thread. The 900CP and 1000CP are a bit more difficult to adjust to get a balanced tension. They were not bad machines or severely defective or anything like that. Janome engineered a better system with a small change. I would not pay full retail prices for the CP models. The prices you quoted look like full MSRP for the CPX models. It's worth shopping around. There are videos on YouTube and other sites showing how to use the older machines. HTH ------ Fictionfan

I am still learning my way around. I will do some more homework on the 900CPX or 1000CPX. I believe the features of the 900CPX is the correct machine for me, but the Dealer scared me!

Date: 3/16/13 4:50 PM Sign up for the Yahoo! users group, SEWITSFORSALE. People sell sewing machines, sergers and cover stitch machines on there all the time. Right here on PR, in the Classified Section, members will occasionally sells machines too. Another source is eBay. Once you've purchased your new CS machine (or even before you do), join the Cover Pro 1000CP Yahoo! User's group which includes both the 900CP, 1000CP, 900CPX and 1000CPX. They have a switch to help prevent skipping on heavier fabrics. You should be paying $399-$429 for the 900cpx and apx $600 for the 1000cpx. I would go for the 1000--you can do more with it. The person that told you there were known defects is patially correct. If you didn't tighten the tensions on heavier fabrics you could get skipping. It wasnt a defect so to speak--just you have to know what you are doing with it. ETA: Please don't go and waste your local salesperson's time by having her demo something you intend to buy online. It costs money to keep a brick and mortar store open and to have salespersons there to help you if you don't understand something with your machine. Negotiate with her and see if she will come closer to that $600-ish figure. As a salesperson, it is really hard to show someone a machine and then have them come back with one off the internet and want you to help them with it. That sale generated no income for your store but yet the person needs you now? We have to charge for lessons if you do not buy from our store.
